Three months after his loan was terminated with the Philadelphia Union, Carlos Miguel Coronel checked in to make his UEFA Champions League debut for Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday against Napoli.
The 22-year-old Brazilian replaced injured starter Cican Stankovic after, according to a match report on ESPNFC.com, the starting goalkeeper “suffered a bizarre injury as he appeared to pull a hamstring when chasing back to cover a Mertens lob.”
Coronel was brought in t the Union on season-long loan in preseason, but Salzburg requested to have him back in July and the Union obliged, bringing in veteran Joe Bendik from the Columbus Crew to fill his spot on the roster.
Coronel made four appearances and three starts for the Union and eight appearances on loan with Bethlehem Steel FC in the USL Championship. The biggest knock on him was his status as an international player, which made things difficult at times for the Union juggling more international players than available first team spots.
