Zach Pfeffer loaned to Colorado Springs

Former Philadelphia Union homegrown switches USL teams

MLS: Preseason-Colorado Rapids vs Swope Park Rangers Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Former Philadelphia Union homegrown Zach Pfeffer might still have a chance to play this season in Colorado, after all.

But it will be with Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC instead of the Rapids.

Pfeffer, the Union’s first-ever homegrown signing, was traded in the offseason to the Colorado Rapids for a pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, but his only playing time has come on loan with Charlotte Independence in the USL.

He’s made 16 appearances for the Independence, which is Colorado’s official USL affiliate at least until their two-year agreement expires at the end of the season.

The two teams are in identical spots in the league standings (fifth place) in opposite conferences so Pfeffer still has a good shot to be playing in the postseason: the top eight teams in each conference go to the playoffs.

Switchbacks FC will be Pfeffer’s third team in USL. He made three appearances for the Harrisburg City Islanders on loan from the Union from 2014-15.
