VE and West Chester United face off with U.S. Open Cup berth on the line

U.S. Soccer announced Friday that the winners of the third round qualifiers will book a spot in the 2020 U.S. Open Cup

A local team is guaranteed a spot in the 2020 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after U.S. Soccer made the decision to cancel a fourth round of qualifying in December.

Now the question is just whether it will be West Chester United or Vereinigung Erzgebirge taking one of 12 spots up for grabs in the third round of qualifying this weekend.

The United Soccer League of Pennsylvania rivals play at VE in Warminster on Sunday at 2 p.m. The two teams met in the first round of qualifying last year in a game that ended up a 1-0 win for the visiting West Chester.

West Chester ended up qualifying for the tournament advancing through four rounds and after advancing on PKs against FC Baltimore Christos in the first round lost to USL Championship team Birmingham Legion on the road.

VE is seeking to make the tournament proper for the first time since 2002. West Chester is seeking the club’s second straight appearance and third overall.
