With the 2020 Philadelphia Union regular season kicking off in only 68 days, the offseason is in full swing and excitement is growing for the new campaign to begin.
Nothing says “Tis the Offseason” like transfer rumors and allocation money, so let’s look at what TAM/GAM Ernst Tanner has available in 2020 after a busy beginning to the offseason saw the Union amass $600,000 in allocation money, and offload over $2 million in salary.
In December 2018, the Colorado Rapids traded the Union $100,000 in GAM for 2020 for Keegan Rosenberry, plus an additionally $100,000 GAM if performance metrics were met. Although the specifics of the metrics were not disclosed in the deal, Rosenberry played every minute for the Rapids in 2019 so it is likely the metrics were met.
During 2019’s SuperDraft, the Union traded all five of their picks to FC Cincinnati in exchange for allocation money in 2019, and up to $50,000 GAM in 2020 based on performance metrics met by the three players FC Cincinnati selected with those picks.
In February, the Chicago Fire traded the Union $100,000 in TAM for 2020 for CJ Sapong, and it is believed the forward met the performance metrics which triggered an additional $50,000 GAM for this year.
In May, the Union acquired $400,000 in GAM and $100,000 in TAM through a trade with Columbus Crew for David Accam as well as acquiring $175,000 in GAM from Nashville SC for Derrick Jones.
This offseason, the Union traded Auston Trusty to the Colorado Rapids for $300,000 TAM for this season. Additionally, the Union traded Fafa Picault to FC Dallas for $300,000 GAM for this season.
In total, these deals will bring the Union $500,000 in targeted allocation money, and as much as $1,175,000 in general allocation money. This stash of cash should provide Ernst Tanner flexibility this transfer window to make some moves to bolster the squad and build off a strong 2019 campaign.
