Union Academy in College

Connor Maloney, Colin O'neill and Colton Amidon score first college goals; Zach Steffen's fifth clean sheet puts the Terps in the ACC semifinals and Georgetown's quartet of Academy alums celebrated share of Big East title and place in tournament semifinals at PPL Park on Friday.

Since clinching the Big Ten regular season title, Penn State has had a pair of letdowns with consecutive losses to Ohio State and Akron, but freshman forward Connor Maloney did something in the Akron loss on Nov. 6 he hadn't done all season: score a goal.

The freshman from Harrisburg got on the score sheet for the first time this season in the loss to cap a strong regular season campaign that saw him finish with a goal and seven assists, including three that set up winners. Union Academy teammate Shane Campbell delivered the cross on Maloney's first half goal in Akron, a ball Maloney trapped and whipped into the left side of the goal on a half volley. The assist was Campbell's first of the season to go with two goals - he scored a game-winner to beat Penn 2-1 on Oct. 29 - but the second time he and Maloney have linked up on a goal for the Nittany Lions. Maloney assisted Campbell's first strike of the season in a 2-1 win over West Virginia on Sept. 25.

The Campbell to Maloney partnership wasn't the only Union Academy alumni connection in recent weeks. St. John's teammates and Acamedy alumni Brandon Savino and Jelani Williams linked up to score the fifth goal in the Red Storm's 5-0 blowout of Seton Hall on Nov. 8. The goal was the starting sophomore midfielder Savino's second of the season to go with a assist and the second assist of the season for Williams, a reserve sophomore forward.

Colgate freshman midfielder Colin O'neill also found the back of the net for the first time this season, scoring the eventual winner in a 2-0 victory over Lehigh on Nov. 2. Colgate's season ended with a 3-0 Patriot League tournament loss to Holy Cross on Tuesday.

George Mason freshman Colton Amidon's first college goal was a game-winner that beat St. Bonaventure 2-1 on Nov. 10. Fellow Union Academy alum and teammate Zach Herstek, a freshman midfielder, scored the first goal in the St. Bonaventure game, his second of the season. La Salle sophomore Joe Farrell had a game-winner of his own on Nov. 10 to beat George Washington 1-0, his second of the season to go with five assists. The Blue Bell native has been a clutch performer for the Explorers this year, delivering a game-winning goal and setting up three game winning goals. Freshman forward Cameron Kirdzik assisted on Yale's only goal in a 3-1 loss to Brown on Nov. 9. The Flemington, N.J., native has four goals and an assist on the year for the 4-10-2 Bulldogs.

Keegan Rosenberry, Brett Campbell, Melvin Snoh and Jon Azzinnari celebrated a share of the (new) Big East regular season title for the Georgetown Hoyas, which finished the regular season even on points with Marquette after beating Villanova 1-0 on Nov. 8 to earn a spot in the Big East semifinals at PPL Park on Friday.

Zach Steffen and the Maryland Terrapins shared the ACC regular season title with Notre Dame and advanced the conference tournament semifinals with the freshman goalkeeper's fifth clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Boston College on Tuesday. Maryland earned the top seed in the tournament and is secured an at large bid to the NCAA tournament if they don't win the conference tourney. Joining Maryland in the ACC semis this weekend will be Darius Madison's Virginia, which beat Wake Forest 1-0 in overtime on Tuesday.

Jared Martinelli's Temple Owls began their wait to see if their season will continue in the NCAA tournament after they were bounced from the American Athletic tournament with a 1-0 loss to South Florida. They finished the season 10-4-4 with Martinelli leading the team in goals (6) and assists (4).

Thomas Shiiba came within inches of scoring the game-winner for Navy in the Army Navy Cup at PPL Park last Friday. His ball off the post in the 85th minute was put in by a teammate who was ruled offsides, setting up an eventual dramatic game-winner for the Midshipman in the second overtime in front of 7,415 fans at PPL. The win capped off a perfect 9-0 Patriot League record for Navy and 13-3-2 overall.

Sam Frymier registered his seventh clean sheet of the season for Duquesne in a 3-0 victory over VCU to wrap up their regular season on Nov. 10. The sophomore from Downingtown made four saves in the game two days after stopping eight shots in a 1-1 draw with George Mason.

Indiana freshman defender Billy McConnell hasn't played in the last six matches for the Hoosiers, which need to win the Big Ten tournament to have any chance of an NCAA tournament bid. Andrew Herr made his first appearance off the substitute bench and registered his first shot on goal of the season for Big Ten rival Michigan State in a 2-0 win for the Spartans over Michigan on Nov. 9. The redshirt freshman from Millersville (or Philadelphia as the Big Ten Network announcers said during the Notre Dame game broadcast) started every other game for the Spartans this season.

Freshman Colton Storm hasn't been in the lineup for the Tar Heels in their last three matches, including a 2-1 loss to Clemson on Tuesday that bounced them from the ACC tournament. The Mechanicsburg native had started the previous eight matches after seeing limited play in the first seven games of the season while recovering from injury.

In Division III action, Lebanon Valley College's Cam Alexander ended his sophomore season with 7 goals and 4 assists while goalkeeper Thomas Bull and Amherst's season is still very much alive with an NCAA Division III tournament opening round match against Bridgewater State scheduled for Saturday. Bull has 8 clean sheets and a record of 14-0-2 in goal.
