Every week we "Monday morning manage" the previous Philadelphia Union games, talking about the major points in the game that changed momentum, led to goals and won or lost the points for the Union. This week, we analyze how the Red Bulls got revenge for the US Open Cup game.

An exciting few weeks saw a great win in the U.S. Open Cup followed by a tired looking loss against D.C. United on a Sunday. This week, the players should have had time to recover, and then there was the excellent news of the Tranquillo Barnetta signing. It seemed bound to end with a win against the rival New York Red Bulls, but unfortunately Tim Ream wasn't playing and the Red Bulls took advantage of their chances to win 3-1. How did the Union throw this one away?

1. Zach Pfeffer going high and wide.

Statistics can be a funny thing. The Philadelphia Union outshot the Red Bulls 17-8. However, the Red Bulls got 4 out of 8 on target (50%) and scored 3 goals (25% save rate). The Union got 3 of their shots on target (17.6%) and only 1 goal (66.67% save rate). That isn't good enough in terms of getting shots on target, and the chances the Union had weren't all that difficult.

Perhaps the worst offender in the lack of shooting ability was Zach Pfeffer. He had plenty of chances throughout the game to get a shot off, and every single time the shot went high, wide, and not very handsome. You could say that it was good defending by the Red Bulls to keep the shots from outside the danger area, but Pfeffer still has to put those on target and test goalkeeper Luis Robles. As the Union have found out to their cost, sometimes there are rebounds that can be simple tap-ins.

2. Waiting for substitutions to be reactive instead of proactive.

Jim Curtin once again got caught out in the substitution front and that's maybe where the game was lost. After a first half where the Union had the better of the play, without forcing a save from Luis Robles, Jim Curtin waited to change things around. The first substitution of the match was Red Bulls manager Jesse Marsch bringing on Shaun Wright-Phillips, and the momentum changed. By the time any Union sub could positively change the game, it was 1-0 to the Red Bulls.

Not only did Curtin wait too long to change the players on the field, but the tactics didn't change either. The substitutions were to bring on Fernando Aristeguieta for Eric Ayuk and new player Tranquillo Barnetta for Zach Pfeffer. Those changes could have allowed a move from the 4-2-3-1 formation. However it wasn't until Conor Casey came on for Ethan White that any change to the formation was made.

One of the things that makes a coach a good coach is the ability to make changes to tactics, formation and the playing personnel that allow a positive impact on the game. Even bringing on the new signing to a fantastic ovation from the fans didn't manage to do that. Jim Curtin often says they learn a lot from games, but when the same things are happening it doesn't seem those lessons are being learned. To avoid another coaching change in future Curtin is going to have to start to learning on a much quicker timeline than he is currently doing.

3. Giving Shaun Wright-Phillips too much respect.

I don't think Shaun Wright-Phillips is that good a player. I never have. He is certainly fast, however I have never thought his decision making was elite, and the only reason he had as top level a career he did is because of his speed and relationship to Arsenal legend Ian Wright. He is now older, more injury prone, and will not be as fast as when he started.

That being said, no matter how good a player is, they can produce when shown too much respect. Think back to how well Sebastien Le Toux and Andrew Wenger played when the Portland full backs gave them too much room. I don't think Raymon Gaddis even tried to tackle SWP once. Ethan White was so mesmerized by his play that he watched as Bradley Wright-Phillips lost him and scored the second goal. That's not good enough for professionals playing in the highest league in the country.

4. Welcome to MLS Tranquillo Barnetta.

Poor Tranquillo. First minutes in to the first game for the Union, and new star Tranquillo Barnetta gives away a penalty. It isn't necessarily the fact that match speed rustiness forced a mistimed tackle, but Shaun Wright-Phillips showed his experience, slowed his run enough for Barnetta to be right behind him, and fell over. From the referee's viewpoint I could see why it was given. They have a hard job, and this was well done by SWP to win his team a penalty.

5. Fabinho not knowing what to do with the ball.

At 2-1, the Union were going all out attack. Casey was on for White and nearly got a goal. Time was running out and Fabinho had the ball on the left hand side. He could have passed to Le Toux to attempt to get a difficult cross in, he could have crossed the ball himself, but instead, he just allowed the ball to be taken away from him. At that point in the game, down 2-1, it's asking for a goal to be scored against you. Sure enough, that's exactly what happened, as the Red Bulls raced away and scored easily.

I'd never blame the team down 2-1 for going for it. However, Fabinho has to make sure he can get a cross in to the box when he has the chance. Doing nothing with it is always going to end badly.

The Union now have a few options for the rest of the year. They can continue to try and win every game, and possibly win nothing. They could give up on the very faint hope of the playoffs, and rest their players for the U.S. Open Cup games. Personally, I hope it is the second option.

This week we talk to Jason Iapicco of Once a Metro, SB Nation's New York Red Bulls blog, about the upcoming match between the Philadelphia Union and the New York Red Bulls - their "not-rivals" rivals.

tBG) The Red Bulls are in a respectable third place in the east at the All-Star break. Is this about where you expected the team to be?

OaM) I honestly don't know what I expected of this team at the beginning of the year, aside from making the expanded playoffs. Mike Petke was let go. We lost our best player, Thierry Henry, to an expired contract and then retirement. The roster went through an upheaval with the bigger impact guys like Jamison Olave and Markus Holgersson out the door. The Red Bulls had over half of the Starting XI from last year replaced when we started the season against Sporting Kansas City. The fan base (or part of it) was on a knife's edge, looking for any reason to go truly ballistic on management.

Given all of that, I'm happy with where the Red Bulls are. They could be better if not for a 4 game MLS losing streak (we're 8-2-5 outside of it), but overall the team shows a lot of promise. The biggest issue going forward will be keeping the core together. Kemar Lawrence (who is expected to be rested Saturday) and Matt Miazga are two young players who could attract interest before the foreign windows close, and a recent showing in the All-Star Game by Dax McCarty could draw some interest as well. If the Red Bulls can hang onto their core guys, and stay healthy, they are a threat to make MLS Cup, and even win it.

tBG) The Red Bulls are linked with Argentine winger Gonzalo Veron of San Lorenzo. Do you think the Red Bulls will sign him, and are there other signings on the horizon?

OaM) All reports suggest this deal is done and as good as signed. There has been no public announcement by the team, presumably as they are waiting for everything to get processed. Shaun Wright-Phillips (Bradley's brother) was signed this week also, and can play as a winger, central midfield, and according to him, right or left back. We have a rarely used (30 club matches since 2011) Chilean by the name of Santiago Dittborn on trial with us "for fitness", which happened to be the same thing we were told about Shaun. After that, I can't see the team bringing any other player in. These three should bring us to the roster limit and take up whatever number of international slots we happen to have right now (we're already over 8).

tBG) Losing to the Philadelphia Union in penalties in the U.S. Open Cup must have been brutal. Does that give the Red Bulls that much more incentive to beat the Union?

OaM) Anytime we lose to the Union is hurts. The Union ended it's winless streak at Red Bull Arena and then won again in the Open Cup after fighting over the match date. Of course this match has some added flavor from the Red Bulls side this week. I don't know the exact number of supporters, but you can bet that the Red Bulls will use up their allotment like they usually do for weekend matches. Coming off of impressive wins over Chelsea and Benfica (yes, I know they are only friendlies) and 2 straight MLS wins over Orlando City and the New England Revolution, look for the Red Bulls to come out buzzing and prove the two losses are more of a fluke than a pattern.

Predicted lineup: 4-2-3-1 (L-to-R): Luis Robles; Roy Miller, Damien Perrinelle, Matt Miazga, Connor Lade; Felipe Martins, Dax McCarty; Shaun Wright-Phillips, Sacha Kljestan, Lloyd Sam; Bradley Wright-Phillips

Predicted score: Union 1-2 Red Bulls: The Red Bulls are looking for revenge and with no MLS match last weekend, all of the players should be fresh and up for dispatching the Union.

Date: Saturday, August 1st; 7:00 P.M. EDT

Place: PPL Park, Chester, Pennsylvania

TV: 6abc

In their history, the Philadelphia Union have never managed to defeat the New York Red Bulls twice in a single MLS season. Tomorrow is their opportunity to change that.

Their home fortress battered, the New York Red Bulls will come down to PPL Park in pursuit of their first win against their not-rivals since April of 2014.

Depleted defense, again

The last time the Union met New York in Major League Soccer play, the Red Bulls were without their three best center backs: Matt Miazga, Damien Perrinelle, and Ronald Zubar. Against the wishes of everyone watching the game, Karl Ouimette and Roy Miller started in the center of defense for that one. It went about as well as you'd expect.

Fortunately for the Red Bulls, Miazga and Perrinelle are healthy and in good standing, making them eligible for tomorrow's clash. Unfortunately, both of New York's first-choice full backs will be unavailable. Chris Duvall fractured his tibia in early July, and Kemar Lawrence is resting after setting all of CONCACAF and CONMEBOL on fire. As a result, Connor Lade and Anthony Wallace will flank the center backs for the fourth-straight game.

Lade and Wallace have both been widely lauded during this latest run of games, so they are no slouches even though they aren't regular starters. The two have long been mediocre-at-best MLS players, but playing time in the USL has seemed to prepare them for their big-league test. They are perfect examples of the depth that the Red Bulls have seemed to emphasize under Ali Curtis and Jesse Marsch.

No Nogueira

Noguiera just said he's out at least three weeks with a pulled quad. Hopes to be back by end of August.

— Dave Zeitlin (@DaveZeitlin) July 29, 2015

Nogueira's injury is frustrating for so many reasons, not least of which is his recent form. He's looked more complete than he ever has, displaying a level of composure going forward that just wasn't there in 2014.

The quad strain is just another in a long list of ailments that the midfielder has picked up since joining the Union. While it's perhaps too early to slap the injury-prone label on him and send him to a nice farm upstate, each injury causes a bit more worry. At 27, Nogueira should excel in a Union jersey for years to come; it would be a shame to see his time in Philadelphia cut short due to nagging injuries.

Big-picture questions aside, Nogueira must be replaced in the short term. Zach Pfeffer will probably start tomorrow, but Tranquillo Barnetta could see some time in central midfield past this weekend. Jim Curtin views his new signing as a central midfielder primarily, which raises some questions about fit when the roster is at full health. Though for now, things appear to be fairly straightforward in the center of midfield.

In with Abang

Since his nine-minute substitute appearance against the Union in May, the longest of his fledgling MLS career at the time, Anatole Abang has played in every league game for the Red Bulls. After scoring goals in back-to-back games off the bench, the Cameroonian striker earned a spell in the starting lineup.

Though he's returned to the bench, Abang poses a smart, physical threat that could pester Maurice Edu and his center back partner for the last half hour.

Brother Act

Earlier this week, the Red Bulls announced the signing of Shaun Wright-Phillips, older brother of Bradley. The move has been met with some criticism, as skeptics claim that Shaun was only signed because his brother has been a roaring success for New York. They're right.

Shaun is (was?) a pacey winger, who has spent the last few years languishing on Premier League benches and in Championship lineups. Though he's getting up there in age, the elder Wright-Phillips will likely start on a left wing that's suddenly become a lot more competitive. Journeyman Mike Grella had seemed to find his niche in that spot for RBNY, scoring five goals from a wide position this season. You probably know him as the man who murdered two Union players and still walks free.

Whether Wright-Phillips actually manages to wrest the spot from the New York native is an interesting storyline, but whether he deserves it is much more so.

Lineups and Guess

Red Bulls: Robles; Wallace, Miazga, Perrinelle, Lade; Felipe, McCarty; Grella, Kljestan, Sam; B. Wright-Phillips.

Union: Sylvestre; Fabinho, Edu, White, Gaddis; Pfeffer, Carroll; Le Toux, Maidana, Ayuk; Sapong.

I'll go for a 2-0 Red Bulls victory. The Union's defense may have hit rock bottom in DC, but there are more rough days ahead. New York and its high press will be far from forgiving, and without the Union's main conduit in midfield, it could be worse than expected.

Before the Philadelphia Union face the New York Red Bulls, PPL Park will host a match between two teams worth cheering for.

While the anticipation is growing for Saturday's rematch between the New York Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union, that will have to wait just a bit. Before the two MLS teams take the pitch, fans will be treated to an exchange match between Special Olympics teams representing Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Gates at PPL Park will open at 5:30, and the match is set to kick off at 5:45. The Sons of Ben will march in early and cheer for both teams during the run of play. The teams will play two fifteen minute halves, and medals will be awarded to the participants during the halftime of the Red Bulls - Union match.

According to our friends at Once a Metro - SB Nation's New York Red Bulls blog, the Red Bulls have been working with Special Olympics New Jersey's Camp Shiver to help coach soccer skills to those enrolled in the summer camp.
