The Brotherly Game talked to fellow SB Nation soccer site the Burgundy Wave, which covers the Colorado Rapids, about Conor Casey.

A target striker. The necessary piece to solving a problem the Philadelphia Union have had since the beginning of 2011.

Conor Casey, acquired in the Second Stage of the 2012 MLS Re-Entry Draft, will play a role that the Union have not truly had since Alejandro Moreno left via the Expansion Draft. Unlike Moreno, Casey has the talent to score on a regular basis.

However, for all of Casey's talent, the big forward was slightly disappointing last year, as he was paid around $400,000 in guaranteed compensation in 2012 but did not score much, most likely due to an Achillies tendon rupture the year before. Injury concerns will dog Casey during negotiations with the Union for the upcoming season.

The Brotherly Game talked to fellow SB Nation soccer site the Burgundy Wave, which covers the Colorado Rapids, about Casey.

I've always been one of Casey's biggest fans, and I was very sad when the Rapids announced they would not be retaining him. Sure, he was expensive, but he was the best forward in the history of the club. I hope he sticks around in Philly and the fans enjoy his bruising yet finesse style of ball. (I hated the fact that Rapids fans underrated him so much.)

He might not score every game -- he will score, no questions about that, but it's not all he does -- but he is an absolute all-around target forward who contributes every time he is on the field. His off the ball movement is second to none, he will open up lanes for other players and make them look better than they really are, in some cases way better (See: Omar Cummings).

His age and injuries have slowed him down and removed some of his bite, and there's no guarantee that he will ever actually hit his old stride, of course. You won't be getting the dominant big guy of 2009, but even an old and more brittle Casey can do the job better than a lot of lesser target forwards. At worst, he should be a serviceable back-up who will bang in a few and help other guys score even more.

The only worry I would have is if he'll sign a new contract for a reasonable fee. From what we heard, one of the reasons he consented to leave from the Rapids is because he was hoping to keep something similar to the bloated $400,000 contract he had held in years past.

In the first round of the Second Stage of Major League Soccer's annual Re-Entry Draft, the Philadelphia Union took former Colorado Rapids striker Conor Casey. The Union passed on their other selections.

In an unsurprising move to most, the Philadelphia Union selected Conor Casey with their first round choice in the Second Stage of the 2012 Major League Soccer Re-Entry Draft.

The target striker will fulfill a two year long need for the Union at his preferred role up front. Philadelphia has not had a target striker since allowing Alejandro Moreno to leave during the 2010 Expansion Draft.

Casey left the Colorado Rapids in a mutual decision that terminated his five season long relationship with the club. Two years ago, Casey suffered a ruptured his left Achilles tendon while playing against the Seattle Sounders at Century Link Field in Washington state.

An injured plagued 2011 gave birth to a 2012 in which he couldn't fully regain his 2009 or 2010 form, but still was able to play at a high enough level to collect the Rapid's Comeback Player of the Year award.

Rapids leadership pointed to Casey's salary and injury as reasons for his possible departure from his hometown.

"In this league, when you have limitations in the budget, in the roster [so] the top guys when they're missing, they're affecting the team," said Colorado head coach Oscar Pareja to MLSsoccer.com. "It was a difficult year for him for sure."

The 31-year-old scored 50 goals in 119 appearances, 102 of them starts, for the Rapids.

Casey's best season came in 2009, when he netted 16 goals, only one less than MLS Golden Boot winner Jeff Cunningham, and an assist. He followed up that career year with 13 goals and six assists in 2010.

The Philadelphia Union and 17 other teams chose to pass in the first round of the 2012 Major League Soccer Re-Entry Draft, while the Chicago Fire chose to take Maicon Santos.

Almost the entire league chose to pass for their selections in the first stage of the 2012 Major League Soccer Re-Entry Draft, ending the event's conference call in around 15 minutes.

The Philadelphia Union were one of 17 teams who quickly stated their intentions to not participate in the first round of the Re-Entry draft this year. If the Union had taken a player, they would have been forced to give a five percent raise to him.

Maicon Santos, despite the stipulations of the first stage selection process, was taken by the Chicago Fire. The Brazilian striker did not produce last year for DC United, after leaving FC Dallas, as he only scored once in his last 17 games played.

With the first stage completed, the MLS Re-Entry Draft process will continue with teams being able to continue negotiating with players on the list, and also allow them to trade them, until the trade and negotiation blackout is resumed next Friday. A second stage selection would allow the player and team to negotiate a new contract.

The quartet are the most likely selections by the Philadelphia Union in this year's edition of the Major League Soccer Re-Entry Draft.

Of the long list of players who will be available in today's First Stage of the 2012 Major League Soccer Re-Entry Draft, only four should be truly intriguing to the Philadelphia Union for the 2013 season.

Tyson Wahl - The left back has never been the fastest man on the field, but at 6-foot, 2-inches tall, Wahl would immediately become the tallest defender on the Union's backline. His chemistry with the newly acquired Jeff Parke, a teammate of Wahl's with the Sounders in 2010-11, would also do nicely for Philadelphia. Wahl is the best left back, based on the way he's played in the past few years, on the list and, outside of another signing of Porfirio Lopez quality, probably the only risk/reward possibility that would work out well for the Union. His salary also isn't a cap buster.

Conor Casey - Despite suffering an awful leg injury, Casey has remained a prime target for most MLS sides due to his pedigree as one of the greatest target strikers in league history. He may not be able to breakaway from opponents and his scoring touch could have escaped him, but for hold up play and a tall target downt he field, Casey wouldn't be a bad option for Philadelphia.

Eric Avila - The creative midfielder never got the chance to perform at FC Dallas and played on an awful Toronto FC side. He would get the space he needed to show off his talent with the Union, if their midfield works out the way it has shaped up so far this offseason.

Kevin Hartman - Simply put, Hartman was interesting because of the apparent need for a veteran behind starter Zac MacMath. Chase Harrison and Chris Konopka performed very well last year, but there's a certain sentiment around PPL Park that MacMath still needs more mentoring.

A first stage selection will require a team to give the player a five percent raise on his 2012 salary. A second stage, next Friday, selection would allow the player and team to negotiate a new contract.

Four former or current Philadelphia Union players are available in the Major League Soccer Re-Entry Draft, which begins today at 3 pm.

The Philadelphia Union were forced to place goalkeeper Chase Harrison on the Major League Soccer Re-Entry Draft availability list for a second straight year, due to the process' rules, but he isn't the only player with ties to the team who is available.

Also listed are former captain Danny Califf, former fellow central defender Shavar Thomas and former starting striker Alejandro Moreno.

Califf's salary cost most likely forced him out of Chivas USA, while Thomas has hardly played despite a relatively high salary since leaving the Union in 2010. Moreno has been somewhat inconsistent since also joining Chivas, but even though he's aged, he is still one of the better hold up forwards in MLS.

A first stage selection will require a team to give the player a five percent raise on his 2012 salary. A second stage, next Friday, selection would allow the player and team to negotiate a new contract.
