Three goals, two red cards, and one missed penalty made for an exciting Wednesday night.

Just four days after falling to them in Columbus, the Philadelphia Union dominated the Crew in Chester. Goals from Ilsinho, CJ Sapong, and Marcus Epps ensured that the Union took the second leg of the regular-season home-and-home against their conference rivals.

On any other night, the three goals would be the story, but a saved penalty in the 38th minute took on a life of its own. Moments prior to the spot kick, Crew center back Jonathan Mensah earned a straight red card for bringing down CJ Sapong as he bore down on net. What ensued was the second installment of the Roland Alberg Show.

Sapong, who entered the game a goal away from reaching the double-digit mark for the first time in his career, drew the penalty, and thus expected to take it. But Alberg stepped up to the spot, much to the chagrin of Sapong and just about everyone else. If this sounds familiar, that’s because it is: Alberg did the same exact thing less than three weeks ago against Sporting Kansas City. The only difference between then and now? Alberg didn’t convert this time. Steffen tipped his effort onto the crossbar, further escalating a conflict that’s been visibly simmering for weeks. Alberg’s body language was noticeably worse than usual for the rest of the night, and his teammates didn’t embrace him when CJ Sapong finally did manage to break the ten-goal mark.

Fortunately for Alberg and the Union, they led prior to the botched penalty. Ilsinho got his team off the mark in the 20th minute, when he connected with an overhead pass from Sapong. Two horrendously misplayed clearances from Crew center backs Alex Crognale and Jonathan Mensah kept the play alive, allowing Sapong to get on his bike and find Ilsinho in space.

Sapong got himself on the scoresheet in the 66th. The forward followed up his own rebound after heading Giliano Wijnaldum’s cross onto the post, posterizing rookie Lalas Abubakar in the process. The young center back was sonned on both the initial aerial challenge and the subsequent opportunity, as he and his teammates failed to contain the forward all night long.

To cap off what was a terrible night for Columbus’s entire defensive unit, Abubakar saw red ten minutes later. After Ilsinho bodied the center back while contesting (in the loosest sense of the word) an aerial challenge, Abubakar came back for seconds, this time with his hands raised. Having given him a yellow card 40 minutes earlier, Ismail Elfath went straight to the pocket and ended Abubakar’s night early.

Marcus Epps added a third goal after the Union gained their two-man advantage. The winger scored from a few yards out after CJ Sapong nodded Ilsinho’s cross right into his path. Though Columbus was playing with a third as many center backs as they started with at that point, it was still a beautifully worked goal from the Union. All three players involved had spectacular nights, and each of their strengths were on show in the game’s final goal: Ilsinho’s chance creation, Sapong’s physicality, and Epps’s eye for goal.

The win couldn’t have come at a better time for the sputtering Union, who had lost two straight prior to Wednesday night. The win keeps them apace in the competitive Eastern Conference, where they sit five points back of sixth-place Columbus. With the exception of the Crew, all of the Union’s playoff rivals have either played fewer or an equal number of games. With a tough slate of games remaining, a loss here could have placed the Union directly behind the eight ball.

The Union will travel up to Foxboro to take on the New England Revolution next weekend. The Revs trail the Union by three points, but they do hold a game in hand.

Notes

Marcus Epps looked fantastic in his second start on the wing. The rookie recorded eight shots, as he delighted (and excelled) in cutting onto his right foot and taking on defenders. He’d probably consider himself unlucky to have only scored once. While Fafa Picault and Chris Pontius will likely retake their starting spots upon their return to the first team, Epps now presents a legitimate third option if either player falls injured or underperforms.

The Union back line stood strong throughout the match, shutting down the tricky trio of Ola Kamara, Kekuta Manneh, and Justin Meram. Oguchi Onyewu and Jack Elliott continue to be one of the most unlikely center-back pairings in MLS, but they get the job done.

CJ Sapong was a force on Wednesday, as he had a hand in all three goals and drew a penalty that should have led to a fourth.

Union avenge their loss from five days ago

A great win for the Philadelphia Union sees them only five points out of a playoff spot. The first 45 minutes of the game was filled with action, including the Union’s first goal. The first fifteen minutes of the game was mostly a feeling out process, as neither of the teams were able to get much action in the opposing team’s end. That all changed when Philadelphia’s Marcus Epps curled a shot that clanked off the post. This seemed to wake the Union up as their attacked roared to life. Two minutes later in the 20th mintue, the Union tallied their first goal of the game as Ilsinho rocketed a shot into the roof of the net to blast the Union into the lead. The Union almost gave the lead up six minutes later as Columbus had an excellent chance to tie the game, but their opportunity was wasted as the ball rang off the post. The 35th minute saw the first of two Columbus red cards as Jonathan Mensah brought CJ Sapong down in the box, earning the Union a penalty kick. There was a notable argument between CJ Sapong and Roland Alberg on who should take the kick, with Alberg eventually taking the chance. Roland perhaps should have let CJ go, as the PK was saved. The Union went into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead, knowing that they should have been up by more.

The Union came out strong with a strong opportunity seconds into the second half, but Marcus Epps sent his shot high. CJ Sapong had a shot ring off the post in the 58th minute, keeping the Union’s lead still at one goal, giving Columbus hope. Luckily the CJ and the rest of the Union would not be denied as the 66th minute brought the Union their much deserved second goal and put the game for all intents and purposes out of reach. The second Columbus red card came in the seventy forth minute as Lalas Abubakar was sent off after striking Ilsinho across the face. To cap off the scoring, Union rookie Marcus Epps scored his first career goal, growing the lead to 3-0, which ended up being the final score.

The Union grab a lead on a great goal while drama will make the second half anything but dull.

A much different start by the Philadelphia Union tonight against Columbus Crew SC, as they go into the locker room up 1-0.

Disaster almost struck in the third minute when a bad pass forced John McCarthy to come out out of the 18 yard box to do a sliding tackle to clear the ball before the onrushing Kekuta Manneh gets there.

In the ninth minute, Alejandro Bedoya made a nice run down the right wing but Zack Steffan read the cross perfectly and latched on to the ball.

The first fifteen minutes was a continuation of the last match. Neither team was able to establish much of a presence, with the exception of a couple of hard tackles from the Union courtesy of Bedoya and CJ Sapong.

In the 18th minute, Marcus Epps took a shot from the top left corner of the box that bent in and hit off of the outside of the post. Had it been a couple inches to the left it would have undoubtedly gone in, as Steffan was caught rather flat-footed on the shot.

In the 20th minute, the Union were finally able to crack Steffan. Epps went up to kick the ball and missed, and it wound up going to CJ Sapong. Sapong tried a bicycle kick but it went off the side of his foot to Ilsinho who blasted a shot top shelf. Steffan got a hand on it but there was no stopping that shot.

The Union goal really opened up the match. In the 26th minute Columbus had a real chance. Jack Elliott was beaten down the left and John McCarthy came out of his box at the onrushing Ola Kamara. Kamara’s roller was caught by Elliott, who poke it out but only as far as Kekuta Manneh, whose shot rang off of the crossbar and out.

In the 36th minute, the Union played some great passing and Roland Alberg sprung CJ Sapong. Sapong was hauled down in the box by Jonathan Mensah, who was shown a straight red card for denial of a goalscoring opportunity.

Sons of Ben Tifo Director Ryan Bross gives us an exclusive look at how the tifo was made

In honor of the Philadelphia Union’s first Pride Night to celebrate the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA) community, the Sons of Ben created a rainbow flag tifo with the club’s “We Are One” motto imposed over a silhouette of the Philadelphia skyline.

Sons of Ben Tifo Director Ryan Bross told me a little about the tifo. “We (Mollie and I) prepped the day after the friendly and then I went down on that Monday because there it was going to rain. I pulled the tifo up with like five minutes to spare. Since I was down there I went out to get the new colors needed (purple, green, orange) and finished all but the orange. I left the lot around 11.

On Friday, I finished the design of the stencil for the pattern before heading down to Philly from North Jersey where I work during the week.

Next time I was able to get down there was Saturday. All Saturday and Sunday was spent under porch of the old building since there was a 60% chance of rain all weekend. I got the colors, skyline, and copy all laid out before leaving late Saturday. I need was up til about 4:00 AM cutting the stencil for the next day. Went down Sunday around noon and picked up spray paint on the way. Spent the next eight or so hours using the stencil to make the pattern. Laid a highlight and shadow on the letters that I had painted with a broom the day before. And left the lot around 11:45.”

The irony of this being unveiled on the day that President Trump announced that transgender soldiers will no longer be allowed in the military should be lost on no one. The tifo is a magnificent symbol of the inclusivity of the Sons of Ben and the Philadelphia Union. The rainbow tifo also has black and brown included in it, as the eight-color Pride flag was created in Philadelphia as a show of solidarity to people of color within the LGBTQIA community. There are also stenciled images of the Sons of Ben’s Jolly Franklin, Robert Indiana’s iconic “LOVE” design featured in Philadelphia’s Love Park, and a new design of the Union snake superimposed over a diamond with the Commodore Barry Bridge as the top point of the diamond.

Roland Alberg could see another start if the midfield shuffle needs to happen, however Alberg hasn’t shown much more than Najem, and Najem has the bonus of definitely being with the Union next season.

With any luck, Picault and CJ Sapong will return from their injuries. Jay Simpson was ineffectual against Columbus’ defense. At times Simpson looked like he was trying to do too much, and at other times he looked completely lost.

What Columbus will look like

Columbus used a 3-4-3 against the Union fairly well, limiting Philadelphia to just three shots on the evening. Gregg Berhalter isn’t a very imaginative manager, so he will most likely stick with the same formation and lineup as last time.

What to expect

The Union still need to get things figured out in terms of their offense. Jim Curtin isn’t one to tinker too much with the lineup, but something has to change from Saturday. A 1-0 loss with just three shots from a team that was in the top ten in goals scored is inexcusable. The attacking four players have to step up and perform like the season depends on it - because it very well may.
