The Philadelphia Union midfielder does us all proud by doing the right thing.

In tonight’s match against D.C. United, Philadelphia Union midfielder Haris Medunjanin was pushed down from behind by Luciano Acosta. In one of the weirdest sequences (even for an MLS match), Acosta was shown a straight red card by referee Sorin Stoica - and then was allowed to play on.

The crowd was understandably upset and confused - how could a red card be rescinded?

The AR asked Medunjanin if Acosta had kicked him. Medunjanin could have said that he did or just feigned like he wasn’t sure. Instead, he did the right thing. He told the truth - that Acosta had in fact not kicked him. Sorin Stoica then took back the red and allowed Acosta to continue playing.

The Union were able to hang on thanks to some Andre Blake heroics.

A Fafa Picault goal and a couple of huge Andre Blake saves saw the Philadelphia Union win their first game in four tries and take the lead in the all-time series with D.C. United.

Things got off to a bit of an auspicious start when in the 13th minute CJ Sapong was knocked down in the D.C. United box by Kofi Opare, but a penalty was not awarded.

D.C. United would have most of the good looks on goal in the early parts of the first half, as the Union conceded possession to D.C. United and defensive miscues allowed for decent looks on goal for the black and red.

In the 31st, the Union were able to strike. Fafa Picault hit a cross from Alejandro Bedoya and blasted it past Bill Hamid to put the Union up 1-0.

Just before the half, the Union conceded a free kick just outside of the 18. While this would normally result in a Union goal, the kick was too heavy and went wide of Andre Blake’s goal and the Union would go into the locker room up a goal.

Luciano Acosta was shown a red card in the 74th minute for a harsh foul on Haris Medunjanin. In a shocking scene however, referee Sorin Stoica rescinded the red card and allowed Acosta to play on. According to the television broadcast, the AR called off the red card - however as Tommy Smyth pointed out “the red card had already been shown to everyone in the stadium.” Medunjanin later revealed he had told the referee that Acosta hadn’t touched him, which allowed Stoica to reverse his decision.

The Sons of Ben partnered with a local tattoo artist to create today’s work of art.

The Sons of Ben have done it again.

Today’s tifo for the Philadelphia Union’s match against rivals D.C. United is a traditional style tattoo design of the Union’s snake ensnaring and striking the D.C. United eagle. The Union’s “Join or Die” motto is at the top in a traditional tattoo font, and “ZOLO” is done in another traditional script style font in the lower right.

Sons of Ben Tifo Director Ryan Bross and local tattoo artist Kris Kolodziej of The Inkwell tattoo parlor in Southampton, Pa. collaborated on the idea. Kolodziej is a long-time Union supporter and his portfolio includes several Philadelphia sports-themed pieces. “We were talking last year about it, and I asked him for an idea at the start of this season and we picked D.C.,” Bross said, “His design came out super close to an idea that I had last year for the D.C. game.”

Here’s a look at the original design by Kolodziej and the finished tifo by Bross. What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below!

It’s the rubber match of the season for these teams as Rivalry Week finally sees the Union play a rival.

Game: Philadelphia Union vs. D.C. United

All-time record: The Union and D.C. are level at eight wins, eight losses, and four draws in MLS play all time. This will be the rubber match of the season as well, with each team winning one down in the District. The Union and D.C. are also split in U.S. Open Cup play, with each team holding two victories over the other.

What Philadelphia will look like

The Union have been content to play roughly the same lineup from game to game, so don’t expect many changes over last week’s match against the New York Red Bulls. Alejandro Bedoya will get the nod as his injury seems to be healed (and the fact that Derrick Jones is suspended due to his red card). Beyond that, you may see Josh Yaro inserted for either Oguchi Onyewu or Jack Elliott but even that would be a bit of a deviation from the norm.

What D.C. will look like

D.C. may look a bit tired, as they played on Wednesday night Atlanta United at home. A couple of players with Union ties could get the nod to start. Deshorn Brown looked decent in his 29 minute return to MLS, while Sebastien Le Toux played all 90 minutes against Atlanta. It really depends on whether or not Ben Olsen thinks Le Toux can go up against his old team or if Lloyd Sam would be a better option.

What to expect

As this is MLS Rivalry Week, expect this rivalry to continue to be entertaining. Personally I love the Union-United rivalry. The fans have a good rapport with one another, and there’s always on-field sparks between the two teams. I would expect nothing less this time around. Both of these teams are disappointed with where they sit on the table, and both would love nothing more than to get a critical three points from the other.

The key point will be the Union’s defense. D.C. hasn’t been able to score much this season, only netting 12 goals in their 16 games this season. The Union haven’t let in all that many goals (20 on the year) but seem to let them in at the worst possible time, allowing four goals after the 80 minute mark in the past two games. If the Union can defend well and play a complete 90 minutes, they should be able to take the points.

Jim Curtin expects the former Reading United and current D.C. United forward to get the nod on Saturday.

So far, Philadelphia Union manager Jim Curtin is one-for-one on predictions. We’ll have to wait until Saturday to see if he remains perfect.

In his weekly press conference, Curtin said this about D.C. United’s latest signing Deshorn Brown: “We’ll see him for sure. I’d imagine he’ll start against us. He’ll probably play as a reserve tonight and then they’ll let him (start) on the road.” Brown came on in the 62nd minute in last night’s game against Atlanta United.

Brown is no stranger to the Union organization. The Jamaican forward played with PDL affiliate Reading United in 2012, along with former MLS players Stephen Okai and Greg Cochrane. Since then Brown has played in MLS with the Colorado Rapids, in Norway with Valerenga, and in China with Shenzhen before returning to the United States earlier this year with the Tampa Bay Rowdies of USL. He’s also made 14 appearances with the Jamaican National Team.

While with Reading United in 2012, Brown was the PDL’s leading goalscorer with 14 goals, which saw him on the 2012 All-PDL Team as Reading made it as far as the Conference Semifinals. Current Bethlehem Steel FC manager Brendan Burke was Brown’s manager with Reading.

United can certainly use the offensive help. Prior to last night’s 2-1 win against Atlanta, the club had scored just ten goals in fifteen games. Brown’s speed and scoring touch could present challenges for the Union’s defense, which has given up four goals in the last two matches.
