This was an ugly loss.

The Philadelphia Union entered Yankee Stadium with hopes they’d be able to rebound from last week’s disappointing loss at Rio Tinto. But instead, this afternoon’s tilt against New York City FC just ended in more disappointment for the Union, where a 1-0 second half lead culminated with a 2-1 defeat.

Pre-game lineups saw a surprise for the Union, as Josh Yaro returned to the bench for this first time this season, fully recovered from his shoulder injury suffered in training. Warren Creavalle also got a rare start in the midfield this afternoon with Alejandro Bedoya away on international duty.

The match began as a rather sloppy back-and-forth affair, which given the incredibly small size of the Yankee Stadium pitch did not come as much of a surprise to anyone watching. The best scoring chance of the first half came from New York City, who had two incredible opportunities in the span of a few seconds. Alexander Ring fired a shot from the box that rattled off the bar and bounced right to David Villa whose shot was somehow parried away by Andre Blake. While Blake himself could not keep the ball out of harm’s way, Fabinho managed a clearance to keep the match level at nil.

With both teams entering the locker room tied at 0, the second half began tilted toward New York City’s direction, although the Union did generate an early second half chance. Chris Pontius forced Sean Johnson into a necessary save immediately after he obliterated some dude into the smithereens, while at the other end Blake and the cross bar came up with the necessary saves to keep the match knotted at zero.

The scoring finally commenced in the 69th minute. C.J. Sapong played through a nice ball to Fafa Picault whose run consisted of a nice turn inside resulting in a nice shot that beat Sean Johnson to put the Union up 1-0 as a nice celebration followed.

Despite having the lead, Jim Curtin’s side soon faced some, perhaps based on the way the match had been going up to the Picault goal, not so unexpected adversity. In the 74th minute, Blake needed to come up huge in order to keep the Union in the match and in the running for what would have been a vital three points. Jack Harrison’s run got past Fabinho and Medunjanin allowing him to tee-up David Villa. Villa’s shot was parried away by Blake with an excellent leg save, and then on the immediately ensuing rebound attempt by Ring, Blake regained himself to set up yet another excellent save, this time by diving to his left and stopping the ball in its tracks on the ground.

The Union’s run of good fortune would soon end, though. In the 80th minute, with Richie Marquez marking him, Maxime Chanot latched onto the end of a Maxi Moralez corner kick. Moralez launched a header past a helpless Blake and into the net to even the score at 1 apiece with just 10 minutes left.

And then, five minutes later, disaster struck for the Union. Once again off a corner kick, except this time the ball got batted around the box for a bit until Villa was able to get a shot off. Blake made the save, but the rebound found its way to Alexander Callens and this time Blake could not make the save off the rebound. Callens buried it, and New York City left the match 2-1 victors and all three points that the Union badly wanted from this match.

Up next for the Union, they get a week off for the international break before resuming play in two weeks back at Talen Energy Stadium where they will re-encounter New York Red Bulls, the team that the Union got their four-game winning streak started against last month.

Unable to watch the match on MLS Live? Here’s what you missed in the first half.

The Philadelphia Union and New York City FC go into the half scoreless in the Bronx.

Both teams seemed to take the first minutes of the game to feel one another out. In the tiny confines of Yankee Stadium, possession isn’t a long-lasting affair, and neither team was able to get any long stretches on the ball. In the 11th minute, Maxi Moralez was called onside (although that like the legality of the pitch size was questionable at best) on a break, but his shot went well over the goal.

The Union did well defensively, with Fabinho’s positioning and CJ Sapong’s willingness to get back deep and help out notable examples. The pitch was surprisingly sloppy, with guys slipping and falling all over the place. One NYCFC player fell attempting a corner kick, with large hunks of turf being dug up as he went down.

In the 23rd minute Ilsinho had a blast from long distance but Sean Johnson made a great save to push it out of bounds. In the 25th minute, Oguchi Onyewu went up for a header and clashed heads with Maxime Chanot. Onyewu was administered concussion protocol on the field, and while he was able to get up, he had a giant goose-egg under his left eye. He was able to come back into the match after Miguel Camargo picked up a yellow card for stomping on Ilsinho’s foot, however after his eye was all but swollen shut the Union were forced to sub on Richie Marquez in the 38th minute.

In the 31st minute, Alexander Ring rang one off of the post. Andre Blake made a fantastic save on David Villa’s ensuing shot, and Fabinho was able to clear the ball from danger. The Union were able to avoid danger again when David Villa made a rare bad touch when in on Blake, and Andre was able to calmly collect the ball.

Blake made another fantastic save during the first minute of stoppage on another David Villa shot after Jack Harrison made a great cross into the box. After the fourth minute of added time expired the referee blew the whistle, sending the teams into the lockers tied at zero.

We spoke with Jake Gofman of Hudson River Blue, SB Nation's New York City FC blog, about the upcoming match at the House That Jeter Built between NYCFC and the Union.

Eugene Rupinski, Brotherly Game) No Pirlo, no party? What's the story with Andrea Pirlo, and is he even necessary with the club playing so well?

Jake Gofman, Hudson River Blue) Patrick Vieira and NYC FC has made the call, and it's no more parties. The hope coming into this season was that Pirlo could remain serviceable in the center of the park, and that his sensational vision and passing ability would continue to outweigh his defensive deficiencies. Unfortunately for Pirlo, it was apparent at the outset that Il Maestro had lost more than just a step, and was a turnstile of sorts in the midfield. He has become so ineffective in the defense that it is almost as if New York was defending with 10 men. Moreover, the passing hasn't been there either, so the move to bench him had to be made.

The ideal replacement has been Yangel Herrera, who stepped in and, since day one, done everything Pirlo could not. He is a box to box midfield type, focused primarily on defending. Despite being inexperienced, he has great patience on the ball and allowed the forward players to stay up the pitch while he and Alexander Ring spring attacking moves. Pirlo is not going to be a part of the plan moving forward for NYC, and while we'll miss him, it's certainly the right move for the club.

tBG) Level with us. There's no way the pitch at Yankees Stadium is regulation size, right? Is there any sign of NYCFC getting a stadium of their own, or is that a lost cause at this point?

HRB) No, definitely not. It may not even be rectangular to be honest. It's all an optical illusion and I'm you patient zero for starting a conspiracy theory about it.

The supporters of the team are all antsy to get a new stadium, but as of now there are no plans, and NYC FC fans should accept the fact that Yankee Stadium will be the team's home for the next several years. That dude Charles Dunst wrote up an excellent piece on the situation New York's management has created for itself by not being proactive. In effect, management was naive to think it would be easy to find a location that would work, making extravagant promises to the fan base it could not keep. Leadership at the club has realized Yankee stadium is a location the team cannot beat, that has appeal to new fans and provides an opportunity for the team to grow its brand. Expect to see the Philadelphia Union playing NYC FC in Yankee Stadium for years to come.

tBG) New York City FC is playing the New England Revolution on Wednesday. What will that mean as far as squad rotation?

HRB) First of all, what kind of nonsense scheduling is this? Three matches in seven days is outrageous.

Squad rotation has not been a strong suite for Patrick Vieira yet, to say the least. We had a midweek away match against RSL a few weeks back after a weekend game and Vieira overhauled the team, replacing all three attacking player and swapping two defensive players. The team lost a very winnable match that night, and Vieira apologized for the team selection. Tasked with rotating the team midweek this week, Vieira went the opposite route, making very few substitutions and hoping his players could get the three points without expending all of their energy. As the result shows, NYC ran out of gas Wednesday at home and I'm concerned the same may happen against Philly. The main playmakers on the pitch, Harrison, Moralez, and Villa, are all going to be logging all or most of the 270+ minutes played over these seven days and that's a concern.

I imagine Vieira tries for some tempered rotating. I think Moralez and Villa will start again, but he will be quick on the trigger to make a change if they look sluggish. Harrison and/or Wallace will likely rest, and I imagine the same will be true for one or both of our fullbacks. Vieira is still learning on the job, and he has a very tough task balancing the health of his players this weekend against the need to get 3 points.

Injuries, suspensions, etc.) No suspensions, and Yangel is with Venezuela's U-20 team.

Khiry Shelton remains out with a hamstring problem, while Ronald Matarrita and Andre Pirlo are questionable again.

Projected lineup:) Sean Johnson; Frederic Brillant, Alexander Callens, Maxime Chanot, RJ Allen; Alexander Ring, Tommy McNamara, Maxi Moralez; Miguel Camargo, David Villa, Jack Harrison

The Philadelphia Union look to rebound from their first loss in seven matches as they head to the Bronx to face a New York City FC team that has one once in their last five.

What New York City will look like

New York played the New England Revolution on Wednesday, and there’s certain to be some churn in the lineup. Alexander Ring was suspended for the match against the Revs and will be available for selection, however Yangel Herrera is out with the Venezuela U20s. While Ronald Matarrita and Rodney Wallace were called to the Costa Rica National Team, they’ll be available for selection.

Look for NYCFC to keep their biggest assets on the pitch. Sean Johnson will almost certainly be in goal, Maxi Moralez will almost certainly start in the midfield, and David Villa will also almost certainly play up top. Former Union defender Ethan White has been a key to New York’s defense, starting in 12 of the club’s 14 games thus far.

What Philadelphia will look like

The Union will only be missing Alejandro Bedoya and Derrick Jones to international duty, with Haris Medunjanin joining the Bosnia and Herzegovina National Team late to help the Union play one of their most bitter rivals. The Union will look to rebound from their first loss since April 14, when they lost at home to NYCFC.

Jim Curtin hasn’t done much lineup changing this year, so don’t expect much difference in the lineup over last week. The lone exception to that will most likely be Warren Creavalle starting in place of Alejandro Bedoya. This could be a blessing in disguise for the Union, as Creavalle’s defensive presence will allow Medunjanin to press higher up the pitch - although in the matchbox that is Yankee Stadium even that isn’t too far to go.

What to expect

The Union looked sluggish during their loss to Real Salt Lake, and I’m sure coming back to sea level and getting some rest will help them get back to the form they were in when they were easily beating D.C. United and the New York Red Bulls. It’s going to be a tough match, but I think the Union catch a break against an NYCFC squad that will not have the freshest legs underneath of them. They’ll need to capitalize on every opportunity they get while limiting New York’s looks at goal. The first goal is also critical, as aside from the match against Colorado have not been good chasing a lead.
