The Union dropped their first game of the season on Saturday night.

The Philadelphia Union suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday night, falling to Orlando City SC, 2-1.

The away side nearly escaped a first half that saw OCSC control every facet of the game, but Cyle Larin finally managed to translate his team’s dominance to the scoreboard. The third-year forward opened up the scoring in the 39th minute, when connected with Carlos Rivas’s cross from point-blank range.

CJ Sapong evened up the score early in the second half. Sapong, starting in place of the injured Jay Simpson, powerfully headed home a flick from Alejandro Bedoya just seven minutes after the break.

Orlando regained the lead 20 minutes later, with Rivas and Larin’s partnership bearing fruit once more. A cheeky flick from Rivas found a streaking Larin, who stormed past the Union back line and calmly picked his spot.

The Union did have opportunities to get a point out of the encounter, most notably in second-half stoppage time. Just moments before the referee blew for full time, Ilsinho struck the post and Bedoya saw his header denied heroically by Joe Bendik.

With next week’s international break, the Union will have to wait until April 1st to avenge their first loss of 2017. They’ll travel to RFK to take on their old friends, D.C. United.

A 2-2 draw against the reigning Eastern Conference champs sees some good - and some poor - scores.

The Philadelphia Union and Toronto FC played to a 2-2 draw in the bitter cold at Talen Energy Stadium, and unfortunately for the Union it was a draw that felt more like a loss. A penalty kick off of the crossbar by Alejandro Bedoya and a very soft call (I’m trying to be nice here) by referee Mark Geiger allowing a Toronto penalty at the end of the half soured what was an otherwise pretty good showing against the team that lost the MLS Cup in penalties to the Seattle Sounders (we know what it feels like to lose a trophy to them in penalties).

As we do after every match, we asked you our reader to fill out a survey rating the Union players’ performances on a scale from 1 to 10. And as you do after every match, you responded because you’re awesome.

Last week’s fan winner Andre Blake came in second, with a solid 7.35 from the fans. His 6.7 from whoscored.com however was decidedly middle of the pack. The whoscored process rated Fabian Herbers at the top of their poll with a 7.5, edging out Fabinho at 7.4 and Chris Pontius with a 7.3. Herbers two key passes and assist helped bolster his whoscored rating, while Fabinho lead the team in touches (81), dribbles (3), and total tackles (6). The fans rated Herbers a 6.69 (good for seventh overall in fan voting), Fabinho a 6.37 (eleventh place), and Pontius a 6.43 (ninth place).

This weeks winner was in the fan voting was Derrick Jones. The homegrown player’s 7.52 bested Blake and Oguchi Onyewu (7.19 from the fans, 6.9 from whoscored), however he tied Blake in the whoscored system with a 6.7. Jones had another solid game for the Union, and at times was the best player on the pitch.

As always, thanks to everyone who participated in this week’s survey and we look forward to doing it again after the match against Orlando City. Here are the full results:

The Philadelphia Union offense shows signs growth

On a day with arctic winds, the Philadelphia Union offense displayed their potential with a solid performance against a talented Toronto FC side.

Building on a scoreless draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps, the Union put together a quality attack in addition to solid defense.

One of the most effective tactics for Philadelphia was playing down the right flank and deploying Chris Pontius as a target winger.

From his distribution charts, it is clear that most of Pontius’ touches on the ball were in the final third of the field, showing Union Head Coach Jim Curtin’s mindset of getting Pontius on the ball in dangerous areas. Pontius playing off the ball certainly paid off in the 11th minute when he knocked down a Haris Medujanin cross for Jay Simpson to finish the play for the goal.

Speaking of wingers, kudos has to be given to the other winger on the day, Fabian Herbers.

Herbers’s distribution on the day led to a few dangerous opportunities on net, including an assist on CJ Sapong’s game-tying goal. It also illustrated the fluidity of this Union attacking core, especially between Herbers and Alejandro Bedoya. Bedoya and Herbers combined on a few one-two passing attempts that created more danger than we saw in Vancouver last Sunday.

JP Dellacamera pointed out during the broadcast that Curtin wanted to get Bedoya more on the ball in this game and the more concerted effort showed on Saturday. Bedoya played his CAM position from a more center out position while showing more favoritism towards the right flank in the attacking third.

On the defensive side of the ball, two players really stood out.

Derrick Jones was a dominant force in the central midfield on Saturday. He had 12 recoveries on Saturday after recording seven last Sunday. He did get whistled for a questionable penalty call against Jozy Altidore in the waning minutes of the first half.

Jones’s defensive work Saturday versus Toronto FC. Clearances are purple, recoveries are yellow, interceptions are blue, and successful tackles are green.

In the defensive third, he was ever present with six clearances as well. The Union Academy product has come in and filled that box-to-box role beautifully thus far. His defensive work in the midfield gives Haris Medunjanin more leeway to cheat forward and create opportunities.

On Medunjanin, he looked much more comfortable on the ball overall than he did in his debut on Sunday. The Bosnian international had an assist as well as a pass that led to a penalty kick. This is the type of play fans expected out of the gifted midfielder: two quality passes leading to goal-scoring opportunities.

Finally, another set of praise is due to Oguchi Onyewu. Besides his one or two slip-ups, Onyewu looks like the former USMNT standout rather than someone who had not played competitively in more than a year. Onyewu was everywhere on defense on Saturday and continues to look very comfortable in a pairing with Richie Marquez.

This new squad of players has earned two points in two games against two good opponents. The Union will look to continue to build on this solid start next Saturday against Orlando City SC.

The Union gain their second point of the season after an exciting match with Toronto.

The Philadelphia Union and Toronto FC split the points tonight, as they were both able to score two goals a piece. The Union opened the scoring in the 11th minute of this one, as new striker Jay Simpson opened his Union scoring account with a low header after a cross into the box from Fabian Herbers was nodded on by Chris Pontius. Unfortunately that was about all we saw of Simpson as he had to be subbed out in the 29th minute because of a rib injury and CJ Sapong took his place. Four minutes later Alejandro Bedoya had a golden opportunity to double the lead from the penalty spot, but his shot was denied by the crossbar. Another key injury occurred in stoppage time of the first half, as Toronto’s star player Sebastian Giovinco was forced off the pitch after a hard challenge from Oguchi Onyewu. The following free kick caused a weak foul in the penalty box by Derrick Jones on Jozy Altidore, who converted his penalty opportunity, leading to the two teams heading to half level at one.

The second half started out quietly until the 71st minute when Justin Morrow was able to give Toronto the lead 2-1. But not even two minutes later the Union were able to equalize as CJ Sapong was able to deke out the goalie and score his first goal of the season. Both sides gave it their all in the final minutes to try to score the go ahead goal, but it was all for not, and the game was called in a bizarre fashion as the Union looked to be in a potential goal scoring position.

Mark Geiger didn’t disappoint.

A great half by the Philadelphia Union was marred by a call that went Toronto FC’s way at the half, and the sides went in to the locker room at 1-1.

The Union had a good chance early when Alejandro Bedoya hit a great cross from the right over to Chris Pontius, whose header went just wide of the goal.

In the ninth minute, it was a good cross from Fabian Herbers who hit a good cross over to Pontius, however the final touch didn’t come. Just a minute later though, the fortune would change and the hard work would pay off when Fabian Herbers hit a long cross to Pontius, who played the ball back to center where Jay Simpson was able to catch Clint Irwin heading the wrong way. Simpson’s header trickled in, but counted the same as a 30 yard rocket.

The Union had a great deal of success with this formula. Long passes from side-to-side to stretch the Toronto defense and using the wingers (Pontius and Herbers) as the targets to try and make the final play. Defensively, they were for the most part able to keep Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore nullified by keeping Oguchi Onyewu close to Altidore and Marquez close to Giovinco.

Onyewu was whistled for a foul on Altidore just outside of the Union’s box around the 18th minute. Giovinco’s free kick went straight into Derrick Jones, and the danger was removed.

Jay Simpson was injured in the 28th minute, and was replaced by CJ Sapong. Marisa Pilla reported in-broadcast that it was a right rib injury.

In the 31st minute, Fabian Herbers was yanked down in the box by . Alejandro Bedoya took the penalty and crushed the shot off of the crossbar. Toronto cleared the chance, and the opportunity was lost.

In the 37th, Altidore played a great ball out toward Giovinco, but Keegan Rosenberry took a page out of Richie Marquez’ playbook and cleared it with an inch-perfect tackle in the box to clear the chance.

Sebastian Giovinco went down with what appeared to be a dead leg in the 45th minute on a collision with Onyewu. On the restart after Giovinco came off, Derrick Jones got twisted up with Altidore, who did his best Giovinco impression and went down like he’d been shot.

These are the things that will need to happen for the Union to get a good result.

1.) Watch for the mismatch: Last year, Toronto FC had a field day against the Union. They lined Sebastian Giovinco up on their left (the Philadelphia Union’s right) and Jozy Altidore on their right (Union’s left). This put Giovinco up against Keegan Rosenberry and Ken Tribbett and Altidore up against Fabinho and Richie Marquez. The Union will need to avoid these scenarios, instead looking to either force the TFC forwards to cross and putting the physical Oguchi Onyewu up against Altidore and giving Giovinco to Marquez, or force the Toronto forwards - especially Giovinco -out wide toward the full backs.

2.) The atmosphere at Talen Energy Stadium: Yes, it’s going to be cold. But with the fans in full throat behind the Union it will certainly give the club a lift. There’s all sorts of new amenities at the stadium, including some fantastic artwork that continue the rich tradition of the City of Philadelphia’s own murals.

3.) Someone has to score: It will be almost impossible to keep Toronto off of the board. They’re too talented to be held scoreless very often, and they’ll be looking to come back from a 0-0 draw against Real Salt Lake. Whether it’s Jay Simpson, Alejandro Bedoya, Chris Pontius, or someone else, the Union will almost have to score in order to get any points today.
