Poetry Corner Kicks returns for a lousy tie.

The Philadelphia Union dropped a couple of points at home against the visiting Montreal Impact. I take full responsibility for this tie. I had only been following the game from the updates on the MLS app. As soon as I switched to watching on MLS LIVE (once my kids were in bed), the very first thing I see is Montreal scoring the tying goal. Sorry Union fans. This one’s on me. I have a tendency to only watch losing or poor games. That goes with all of my sports teams. I am the curse.

At least the Union didn’t walk away with nothing. They did pick up a point and remain in fourth place in the East. A trip to the playoffs is still a strong possibility, even with the league’s hardest schedule to close out the season. may have to just stick with the updates from here on out. Let’s see how the U (mis)handled the visiting Impact…

Montreal was standing tall
Against the U of Philly
They scored one late in eighty-eight
To make the U look silly

It started well, as I could tell
With Impact missing chances
But so did C.J. who gave leeway
To Ciman’s advances

Blake was big in that night’s gig
As Impact’s O was tamed
They could not score which all the more
Kept Philly in the game

Then ‘fore the half the Union’s staff
Would raise their hands to cheer
As Barny scored, the fans were floored
And some would spill their beer

Forth and back the second half
Seemed to be more the same
Blake’s a wall, our offense stalled
But all would feel the shame

For at the close the Union chose
To cruise until the win
They let Mancosu get to close to
Goal and head it in

The air was lifted out and shifted
Joy to mixed emotions
To share a point sure disappoints
And led to fan commotion

No time to dwell we are compelled
To train and look ahead
We should have won, but let’s move on
And put this game to bed

A Goal of the Week nod and a return to the top of the rookie rankings, respectively.

While the Philadelphia Union didn’t get the result they wanted to against the Montreal Impact, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. Major League Soccer’s weekly superlatives came out yesterday, and the Union’s Tranquillo Barnetta and Keegan Rosenberry were both recognized.

Barnetta’s goal against the Impact was nominated for Goal of the Week. The Swiss midfielder hit this amazing shot during the run of play that froze Montreal goalkeeper Eric Kronberg.

Had it not been for a defensive lapse late in the game, Barnetta’s goal would have won the match for the Union. Barnetta’s goal is currently up against a goal by Sporting Kansas City’s Roger Espinoza.

Keegan Rosenberry also regained the top spot in the unofficial MLS Rookie Rankings column on MLSsoccer.com, thanks to his performance against the Impact. Rosenberry has been in a dogfight with the Seattle Sounders’ Jordan Morris for this honor all season, however with Clint Dempsey sidelined indefinitely it appears as though Morris’ stock is dropping. It is unofficial though, and there’s still a bit of time before the actual MLS Rookie of the Year award is handed out.

A late goal from Matteo Mancosu denied the Union breathing room in a tight Eastern Conference playoff race.

The Philadelphia Union and the Montreal Impact finished all square in a key Eastern Conference playoff match-up on Saturday night. Both halves were bookended with goals, as Tranquillo Barnetta tallied in the 45th and Matteo Mancosu evened it up in the 88th minute.

Montreal had the better of the chances early on, but they couldn't make the Union pay. Lucas Ontivero failed to redirect a Matteo Mancosu cross past Andre Blake in the 7th minute, and Patrice Bernier couldn't connect with a hard-hit cross from Ignacio Piatti two minutes later.

After running onto a ball in the box in the 26th minute, CJ Sapong had a chance to put his side ahead. He dwelled on the ball for just a bit too long, though, and Laurent Ciman recovered to knock the ball out of play.

Montreal's Matteo Mancosu had an opportunity of his own just minutes later, but Andre Blake came off his line to deny him.

Tranquillo Barnetta broke the deadlock just before halftime. With his momentum pulling him to the far post as he ran across the top of the box, Barnetta closed his body quickly and cracked a shot to the near post, beating Eric Kronberg. The goal was his fifth of the season, and his second in the last three games.

The Union were denied a penalty in the 58th minute, when Impact midfielder Marco Donadel bowled over Fabian Herbers in the box. Referee Armando Villarreal's whistle stayed silent, as it did much of the night.

In the 62nd, Mancosu had another chance to get one by Blake, but he was no more successful this time.

With his sixth and final shot, Mancosu finally got his goal. Following a corner, the big Italian forward got his head on a flick-on from Donny Toia. Warren Creavalle had an opportunity to clear the ball, but he didn't have the best angle on it and unfortunately decided to let it run.

Thanks to Mancosu's late equalizer, the Union are still winless (0-3-2) against Canadian teams this season. In the Eastern Conference, they sit in fourth place, just three points ahead of Montreal. Despite their currently comfortable position, other teams will be able to make up ground as they play out their games in hand.

Notes:

Montreal's center-back pairing of Laurent Ciman and Hassoun Camara absolutely dominated CJ Sapong on Saturday night. The forward was limited to one shot, a long-range effort from 50 yards out that flew over the crossbar. On his best scoring chance of the game, Sapong didn't even manage to send the ball goalward as Ciman swooped in deny him a shot. Sapong has only managed five shots in his last six games. He has to heat up if the Union have any intention of getting past the first round of the playoffs.

On the bright side of things, Warren Creavalle put in a complete performance with Brian Carroll and Maurice Edu still working their way back to full health. Playing as the more withdrawn of the two center midfielders, Creavalle put in a ton of work defensively. As adept as he is at running down the ball, Creavalle can get caught up too high on occasion, but that wasn't the case today. In addition to playing well off the ball, Creavalle's distribution was even better than Designated Player and central midfield partner Alejandro Bedoya's. Creavalle is an average player, but he can put together very complete games like this on occasion.

The Union have a tough three-game stretch ahead of them, as they'll take on the Portland Timbers, Toronto FC, and the New York Red Bulls all on the road.

You know the drill.

The Philadelphia Union looked great for the majority of the match against the Montreal Impact, however a late lapse in concentration allowed Montreal to snatch two critical points away from the Union. There were some strong performances, however not everyone looked like they were in their best form. Barnetta's goal was something we'll see on highlight reels for a while, but the Union did wind up giving away possession very cheaply and players just made some poor decisions at times.

So how did the Union players individually perform against Montreal? Fill out the sheet by rating the players on a scale from 1-10 using the guide below. The votes will be counted and in the future we'll compare the fans votes against other player ratings to see just how well the Union did.

Here's the scale:

1 - not a pro (USL/NASL/MLS) quality performance

4 - average USL starter

6 - average MLS starter

The Montreal Impact refused to leave their dressing room on time and start the second half, source says.

A source has told Brotherly Game that the Montreal Impact delayed the start of the second half of the match against the Philadelphia Union when they refused to come out of the dressing room. The source tells Brotherly Game that the Union sent a representative to tell the Impact it was time to come out at the start of the second half and that “They slammed the locker room door shut when they were told to come out.” No reason was given as to why the Impact wouldn’t come out of the dressing room, although they eventually came out and started the second half without incident.

Here’s your chance to talk about the Union as they look to get three critical points against the Impact.

The Philadelphia Union look to keep the Montreal Impact at bay in a critical Eastern Conference matchup this evening at Talen Energy Stadium. The Union (11-10-7) are just three points up on the Impact (9-8-10), and a win today would not only put some distance between the two clubs but could draw them level with Toronto FC (12-8-7) and the New York Red Bulls (12-9-7) depending on the results of those matches.

The Union didn’t fare so well with Andre Blake and Alejandro Bedoya out on international duty, losing 3-0 to the Chicago Fire in Illinois last Saturday. The Impact also had a disastrous last outing, losing to Orlando City 4-1 in Montreal on Wednesday. The Impact will be on short rest and be forced to deal with the brutal heat and humidity, with the game time temperature expected to be 87° F with a heat index of 94° F at kickoff.

While both teams are coming off of heavy defeats, the Union get players back while the Impact lose one.

Game: Philadelphia Union vs. Montreal Impact

All-time record: The Union have won three, lost five, and drawn four against the Impact. In their last meeting, the Union were defeated 5-1 at Stade Saputo. Their last victory against Montreal was a 1-0 victory in Montreal on August 22, 2015.

How the Union will look: Everyone is back from international duty and healthy, although Maurice Edu will most likely not be with the first team. He’s still rehabbing with Bethlehem Steel FC, getting 32 minutes against New York Red Bulls II last weekend. Andre Blake is back from his stint with Jamaica, Alejandro Bedoya is back from his stint with the United States, and no one is suspended, so this will most likely be the best Union lineup we’ve seen all season. Andre Blake in goal and a defensive line of Fabinho, Richie Marquez, Josh Yaro, and Keegan Rosenberry should be what we see on Saturday. The midfield should be Warren Creavalle and Alejandro Bedoya deep behind Chris Pontius, Tranquillo Barnetta, and Ilsinho with CJ Sapong up top.

How the Impact will look: Depleted. A brutal 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Orlando City on Wednesday took a lot out of the Impact, literally and figuratively. Goalkeeper Evan Bush was shown a red card in the 51st minute, so he’ll miss the match. Look for Eric Kronberg to get the start in place of Bush. Amadou Dia, Laurent Ciman, Hassoun Camara, and Donny Toia will most likely be on the back line for the Impact. In the midfield, the Impact will most likely go with Hernan Bernardello and Callum Mallace behind Ignacio Piatti, Kyle Bekker, and Dominic Oduro behind Didier Drogba.

What to expect: Neither team had good outings last time around, however the Union were shorthanded and had a full week to recuperate while Montreal has to travel on short rest. The Union will need to wear down Didier Drogba - he’s 38 and playing in the heat on short rest is a huge ask. That being said, he’s still Didier Drogba and the Union will have to account for him at all times. The Union’s offense is good enough to force a tired Montreal defense into making mistakes and getting good chances in on a backup goalkeeper. Both teams also must realize the importance of this match for the standings, with Philadelphia holding a three point lead over Montreal at this time. Montreal still has a game in hand, but a Union win will allow them to at least keep pace with Toronto FC, New York City FC, and the New York Red Bulls.
