The Union played a forgettable clunker against the Chicago Fire. Warren Creavalle had a bizarre game and fans and pundits did not know what to make of it.

When the score of a game is three for the bad guys and zero for the good guys there's more than enough blame to go around and not much praise. The fans and pundits didn't agree on who to blame and they were equally confused about the team "MVP". Let's take a look at the results of this week's survey:

Where to begin. First of all Tranquillo Barnetta edged out Chris Pontius for player of the game according to the fans, but it's Pontius who gets the overall nod, as subtle as it may be. This is Pontius' eighth overall player of the match award, by far the team lead. It's worth noting that the fans have only voted Pontius as best player twice this season.

After this it just gets weird and so we have to move to bullets:

The fans have it in for Ken Tribbett and it's not completely wrong. He's been voted least valuable player now six times in the last nine games he's played. This time though, no one else agreed as he was voted overall tied for fourth best player.

Roland Alberg was forgiven for his own goal by the fans and voted fourth best player, but overall he ranked last for the second time this season.

Warren Creavalle was crushed by Adam Cann of PSP yet the bot over at Whoscored game him the man of the match with an 8.08 rating. Confusion is king when it's 3-0. Digging in, Creavalle had a monster game statistically, emphasis on large claws. Get this. He totaled seven tackles, ten interceptions and ten recoveries. That's almost a defensive triple double, which isn't even a thing in soccer.

PSP gave John McCarthy man of the match because he really didn't do anything wrong. Fans voted him second lowest. You've already got the picture.

Whatever your impressions of the play of the Philadelphia Union let's hope that you'll be able to wipe them from your memory through some kind of technology innovation in the future, or better yet, a solid recovery this weekend against the Montreal Impact.

Neither the Chicago Fire nor the Philadelphia Union had a great game. These are the moments that decided the outcome.

1.) Due to the untimely passing of Josh Yaro’s mother, he was a scratch against the Chicago Fire. Ken Tribbett started in his place. We offer our sincerest condolences to Josh and his family.

2.) Bad timing - Representing your country at the highest level is an honor, and seeing players on your team given that honor is always exciting. That being said, international duty claimed two of the Philadelphia Union’s most irreplaceable players in Andre Blake and Alejandro Bedoya. No offense to John McCarthy and Tranquillo Barnetta, but there’s a reason Blake and Bedoya are rated higher at their respective positions.

3.) Bad luck - This is an unlucky of an own goal as you’ll see.

Roland Alberg does everything right - tracking back, getting into the play, making a clean tackle in the box, but his clearance attempt went off of his own foot. John McCarthy hesitated for a split second, but that’s all it took and the ball rolled into the corner of the net.

4.) Bad Milk - Sean Johnson had himself a game, making five saves and getting the clean sheet against the Union. The Milkman was a force in this match, making great saves like this one.

As good a shot as Pontius had (watch the ball movement), Johnson’s save was better. Later in the match, he also turned away this Tranquillo Barnetta blast.

I can’t even be mad at these saves.

5.) Bad hands - A bit of controversy in the 34th minute. Keegan Rosenberry’s long throw-in went over to John Goossens, who tried to clear the errant ball. His clearance didn’t go as planned:

Watch closely - Goossens kick takes a funny direction and hits his arm.

This should have resulted in a penalty for the Union, but nothing was called. A 1-1 game is much easier for the Union to manage, especially against a team that thrives on the counterattack like the Fire.

6.) Things fall apart - It was only a matter of time until the Fire scored again. Both teams were getting chances at goal, and all it was going to take was a defensive lapse.

On this break, a great through ball sprung the attack. The Union defense retreated, and Razvan Cocis played a great ball to his left into space between Keegan Rosenberry and Ken Tribbett. Richie Marquez has been playing Luis Solignac, who gained the inside track on Marquez. The pass forward turned Tribbett’s hips, and Solignac was one-on-one with McCarthy. McCarthy did well to come out to his right and cut down Solignac’s angle on his shot, getting his hand on Solignac’s shot and deflecting it. Because Marquez was so deep in the play, Fabinho should have kept closer to Michael de Leeuw, however de Leeuw was left unattended. McCarthy’s parried ball went to de Leeuw, and he shot it past Marquez into the net.

7.) Too little, too late - The Union were down 1-0 at 22 minutes in and 2-0 at 71 minutes in, however the subs were made at 69’ (Ilsinho on for Fabian Herbers), 81’ (Charlie Davies on for CJ Sapong), and 82’ (Leo Fernandes on for Warren Creavalle). The Union looked out of ideas offensively all night, but bringing on the subs so late left very little time for them to get anything going.

8.) lekfnldk - As time was winding down, Arturo Alvarez was sprung on a rush down field. Ken Tribbett was defending him, and Alvarez got him on this move.

Anyone who has seen Alvarez play knows he only shoots with his left. Tribbett bit hard on the fake to the right, and when Alvarez pulled it back left there was nothing left to be done. Alvarez shot it hard and into the back of the net.

Now's your chance to let us know how the Union players did against the Fire.

A 3-0 loss to the lowly Chicago Fire is not something you'd expect from a team that's playoff bound and challenging for a conference title, but here we are. The Philadelphia Union needed three points from this match to keep pace with the rest of the Eastern Conference, and didn't deliver. It'd be easy to paint the loss with a wide brush and say that everyone was awful, but it was more nuanced than that.

So how did the Union players individually perform against Chicago? Fill out the sheet by rating the players on a scale from 1-10 using the guide below. The votes will be counted and in the future we'll compare the fans votes against other player ratings to see just how well the Union did.

Here's the scale:

1 - not a pro (USL/NASL/MLS) quality performance

4 - average USL starter

6 - average MLS starter

9 - MLS All Star

We spoke with Jeff Englehardt of Hot Time In Old Town, SB Nation’s Chicago Fire blog, about the upcoming match between the Fire and the Union.

Locria Nyla, Brotherly Game reader) Do you think Nelson Rodriguez and Veljko Paunovic are doing a good job of rebuilding?

Jeff Engelhardt, Hot Time In Old Town) This is a tough question. I think a lot of the fan base is frustrated with the rebuild and for good reason. The team hasn't shown any progress in the standings from 2015 and losing is getting very tiresome here. However, I do think a lot of the additions Rodriguez and Paunovic have made are solid.

Players like Johan Kappelhof, Michael de Leeuw, Jonathan Campbell, Brandon Vincent, John Goossens, Arturo Alvarez and Rodrigo Ramos have all played very well for a stretch of time at some point. They all look capable of developing into solid MLS players (outside of Alvarez, who is what he is at this point and that's OK). But all of this rebuilding we be for naught if the Fire don't invest all their MLS funny money on a legit superstar in the winter.

Fans are tired of seeing the front office hoard TAM and GAM without ever making a splash. If the Fire finally spend big and land the right player in the winter window, I think the supporting players are in place to see significant improvement in 2017. It absolutely must happen this winter or this "rebuild" won't look like much.

Christian Kinsley, Brotherly Game reader) Is Sean Johnson struggling or is it the team in front of him? Seems he is making an above average number of mistakes for the talent he has.

Hot Time In Old Town) It has been a bit of both for Sean Johnson. I think the Milkman lost his confidence a bit early in the season when Matt Lampson was the primary starter. But the team has had better results with Johnson in goal and he has flashed some of that incredible talent people remember from a few years back.

He still has a few more lapses than he used to, but the problem is he does get overwhelmed at times because of the defense. The defense was actually solid early in the year but with so many young rookies in the back four, it has come to the point where they are all tired and it shows. They're just not used to playing this schedule.

If you look at the 6-2 scoreline against D.C., you might think Johnson had an awful game but he was actually spectacular for a lot of it. The problem was the floodgates opened in a big way and he started to get a bit run down trying to stop chance after chance. Overall, Fire fans are still behind Johnson.

Brotherly Game) This was supposed to be a rebound year for the Fire, with them picking up Brandon Vincent and Jonathan Campbell in the SuperDraft as well as a slew of players (João Meira, Michael de Leeuw, Luis Solignac, etc.) throughout the year. What happened, and do you expect another roster purge when the season is done?

Hot Time In Old Town) I think what happened, primarily, is there was just so much "new." Veljko Paunovic had to learn how to be a head coach in MLS and how to relate to this group of players. That alone is a tall task. Players like Campbell and Vincent are fresh out of college and have a lot to learn about the league. More accomplished guys like Kappelhof and de Leeuw are good but they too have to learn the style of play and build chemistry with their teammates.

Some of those things took longer than others and it all happened too late. The Fire played their best soccer of the season the last two weeks before the D.C. game. If they play the way they did against Montreal and L.A., they are going to be a tough out the rest of the season and they'll prove to fans their is finally something to build on. The team would have you believe the D.C. loss is an anomaly and it could be. It was the third game in seven days.

They really need to bounce back Saturday and show that brief glimpse of good form was something that can be carried out the rest of the season. Either way, I don't see a roster purge coming. Rodriguez and Paunovic believe in these young guys. They just need to land the superstar to bring it all together.

Suspensions: Khaly Thiam. Even if he wasn't suspended, Fire fans would boo him off the field. He got a red in D.C. for a hard foul on Fire favorite Patrick Nyarko and then threw the ball at him. People want Thiam off the team immediately. Nyarko is a deity in these parts.

Call-Up: David Accam, David Arshakyan

Lineup Prediction: Sean Johnson; Johan Kappelhof, Jonathan Campbell, Joao Meira, Brandon Vincent; Matt Polster, Razvan Cocis; Arturo Alvarez, Michael de Leeuw, John Goossens; Luis Solignac

In their third and final meeting of the regular season, the Philadelphia Union and Chicago Fire will try to break their all-time deadlock once and for all.

Game: Philadelphia Union vs Chicago Fire

Date: Saturday, September 3rd

Time: 8:30pm ET

Venue: Toyota Park

Referees: REF: Baldomero Toledo, AR1: Eric Boria, AR2: Logan Brown, 4th: Marcos DeOliveira

Television: The Comcast Network

Streaming: MLS Live

All-Time Record: The Union (11-9-7) and the Fire (5-12-8) have historically split the results right down the middle through 17 league meetings, with 6 wins each and 5 draws to round out the rest. In a snowy early-season encounter, Chicago managed to claim all three points at home with a 1-0 win before the Union struck back in a 4-3 early-summer frenzy at Talen Energy Stadium. The only match to separate the two came in the form of a Sebastien LeToux winner in the 2015 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup semifinal round.

How Chicago will look: The Fire's lineup will be markedly different from their first encounter, when Gilberto (contract terminated), Kennedy Igboananike (traded), David Accam (international duty), and Matt Lampson (back to the bench now that Sean Johnson is healthy) factored into the game. At the bottom of the table, with their strong US Open Cup run behind them, further changes would be understandable in response to last Saturday's 6-2 drubbing at the hands of D.C. United. That loss, however, came at the end of a successful string of positive results and hectic travel schedule, so former Union player and current Fire manager Veljko Paunovic may try to keep things consistent. In front of Sean Johnson's goal should be Johan Kappelhof, Joao Meira, Jonathan Campbell, and Brandon Vincent. Matt Polster, John Goossens, Razvan Cocis, and possibly Arturo Alvarez (in for suspended Khaly Thiam) will run the midfield, with Michael de Leeuw sitting behind striker Luis Solignac (formerly of the Colorado Rapids).

How Philadelphia will look: Coming off of an impressive home win against Sporting Kansas City, Jim Curtin would probably prefer to trot out the same lineup in Chicago, though Alejandro Bedoya and Andre Blake will both miss the game for international duty. Matt Jones has come along in his recovery (knee sprain), but we will see John McCarthy suit up for his first start of the 2016 season. Josh Yaro made fantastic use of his two most recent starts to make a strong case for maintaining a spot along the back with Fabinho, Richie Marquez, and Keegan Rosenberry. Chris Pontius is a lock to start on the left wing when healthy, and Fabian Herbers has made himself pesky along the right wing while Ilsinho has been on the mend. Maurice Edu still seems to be a week or two away, and while Brian Carroll has returned to full training, it seems likely that Warren Creavalle will slot in in front of the back four. In Bedoya's absence (and knowing Tranquillo Barnetta and CJ Sapong are certain to be in the starting lineup whenever healthy), the most logical move would be to plug the red-hot Roland Alberg into the mix. Alberg will have been eyeing this fixture in since June, when he lit the Chicago defense (largely the same one that will line up on Saturday) for a hat-trick and a forced own goal.

What to expect: The Philadelphia Union have only just recently begun collecting points on the road, while Chicago has managed just four wins out of a dozen games at Toyota Park this year. Look for the Union to continue their steady pressure, and for the hungry offensive to pin the Fire defense back for significant stretches of the game. The real problem for Chicago continues to be in their attack, which has mustered a league-low 29 goals (11 scored by players who will not be on the field on Saturday). The scales seem to be tipping in Philadelphia's favor, but both sides have been trading blows evenly for the past seven years no matter where they've been in the standings.
