Rate the U: A short bench shines in Chester

Fontana’s goal in stoppage salvaged a lackluster defensive performance

After plenty of chances it was not until the 73’ when Anthony Fontana, who was on for about 10’, scored. Fontana did not stop there, as it was his shot in stoppage time that gave the Philadelphia Union its 3 points. He is without the doubt the best attacker of the night, with the amount of work he put in his 30+ minutes of game time.

It’s not all positive though, with the U playing up a man for those 30+ minutes, it was their defense that looked tired. At one point most of the team was playing behind the ball when they had possession at midfield. They also allowed the Revolution to run all around the middle of the field, basically allowing them to walk up to Andre Blake and convert the game tying shot in the 81’.

Philadelphia Union to kickoff annual Kick Childhood Cancer campaign today

The KCC kickoff happens during September, which is childhood cancer awareness month

September is childhood cancer awareness month and for the seventh straight year, the Philadelphia Union will raise awareness for pediatric cancer. It is all part of the annual Kick Childhood Cancer campaign. Happening today the U is organizing a series of virtual events, with everything leading up to Saturday’s home game against New England Revolution.

Each player is being paired with a child from Kisses for Kyle, a foundation of services to families fighting childhood cancer here in the Delaware Valley. Twenty-five kids will be paired up with players, and will receive a specialized Union care package.

The partnership doesn’t just stop at a care package. The club also hosted a video call, giving the kids and players an opportunity to meet and get to know one another. During tonight’s game the boys in blue’s bench will be surrounded by cutouts of their buddies. The Revs will also be surrounded by the buddies they are working with throughout the year.

Before tonight’s match, the U will be wearing a special warm-up top. The back of each jersey will feature a line that says “I play for ____” with a blank space following for players to write in their KCC buddy’s name. When it comes to the starting lineup, it will be announced by the KCC kids and video messages from the kids to the players will be shown on the Subaru Park videoboard.

The Revolution march into Chester looking to put an end to the Union’s momentum

The Philadelphia Union are looking to get their fourth victory in five games when they host the New England Revolution Saturday night. The revs come to Chester seeking their second straight road win. The U are also looking for their second straight win, after a convincing win 3-0 win in Harrison, NJ last week.

That 3-0 win was all off the backs of the Union’s Homegrown players, showing how the U has one of the league’s best Academy programs. Both Brenden Aaronson and Matt Real scored a goal in that game. Aaronson’s 22-yard strike was something that stood up for Jim Curtin. This is what Curtin had to say after the game about Aaronson’s finish, “I was mad at him because he was in that green zone a couple times earlier and his first touch let him down. But overall now to finish that one from distance is something we’re proud of and all the hard work he’s put in in front of goal is paying off for him and our team. He deserves the credit there.”

A big issue the Union are facing for tonight’s matchup, the injury bug. As detailed in this report, the U have five players listed as questionable for tonight’s matchup. According to the injury report most of the players are dealing with an “undisclosed injury.” Those players are Ilsinho, Kai Wagner, Warren Creavalle and Jack Elliott. Sergio Santos is listed as questionable with a hamstring injury. The only player that definitely will not be playing is Aurelien Colin, who is still out with a leg injury. On the Revolution’s side they will be without two midfielders, Luis Caicedo and Charles Gil.

Yellow card suspension watch continues tonight as well. Union Midfielders Jose Martinez and Jamiro Monteiro will serve a one match suspension “If” they receive a yellow card during tonight’s game.

Union pick up three points and move to second place in the east

For the first time since 2015, the Philadelphia Union got 3 points in Harrison, New Jersey. The start of the match, the U spent plenty of time on defense. Ten minutes into the match the New York Red Bulls had most of the possession. Brenden Aaronson would convert off a quick combination to put the U up.

From an attacking standpoint, the boys in blue were on point. Including the team’s second goal which had four Union players touch the ball.

The Union are looking to take advantage of the struggling Red Bulls

It has been twelve days since the Philadelphia Union last played their I-95 rival New York Red Bulls. In that time the Union have gone 1-1, losing their most recent match in Columbus. As for New York, they have gone 0-1-1 and have even dismissed their head coach.

The Red Bulls come into tonight’s match needing a quality win. The Union often struggle inside the New Jersey stadium, out of 12 matches played there during the regular season the boys in blue have only won once. However, the current form for the Red Bulls is dreadful with only scoring twice over their past 6 games. The stretch of bad games not only claimed Chris Armas’ job but also his assistant coach C.J. Brown.

As for the U, after failing to finish on multiple occasions in Columbus, the Philadelphia Union are looking to get back to their winning ways. IF they do get the win, it will be without defenders Aurelien Collin and Kai Wagner, who are out with leg injuries. There are two other players to keep a close eye on and that is midfielders Jose Martinez and Jamiro Monteiro, if either of them gets a yellow card tonight they will miss the game against New England next Saturday.

Przybylko’s performance nets him Player of the Week

Przybylko becomes the Union’s 12th player to earn MLS Player of the Week honors

For the first time Kacper Przybylko was named MLS Player of the week. Major League Soccer announced Przybylko was voted the player of the week for both the seventh and eighth weeks of the season. He is the 12th player in team history to earn the recognition.

Przybylko was crucial to the Philadelphia Union’s back to back wins. He scored the game’s only goal against New York Red Bulls, Tuesday night. On Saturday night, Przybylko scored a brace and an assist in the teams 4-1 win over D.C. United. The Union forward now has four goals on the season and is tied for seventh in the race for the league’s Golden Boot.

Tuesday’s night goal against New York came at the 31st minute when Przybylko finished a wicked cross from Raymon Gaddis. Gaddis crossed the ball from the right side of the 20-yard box to directly infront of Przybylko, who tapped the ball in for the goal.

The in-form striker continued to be involved in scoring when he once again had a tap in goal against D.C. in the 7th minute. Then in the 16th minute he had an incredible right-footed shot from outside the box, to put the U up 2-0. The action didn’t stop there for Przybylko, the german-born striker added an assist when he helped Brenden Aaronson score for the team’s 4^th goal

The Union will have their next game Wednesday night, September 2 when they take on Columbus Crew. That game can be seen on WPHL 17 at 7:30 p.m., it will also be available to stream at PhiladelphiaUnion.com for people living in the Philadelphia broadcast area.

Rate the U: Curtin’s rotation ends with a great performance

Gaddis was given the night off and Mbaizo looked great with the chance he had

It was a night that the River End would have been rocking and screaming with a lot of Doop’n and colored smoke bombs. However, in these pandemic times we are forced to socially distance from our Philadelphia Union. But one thing that was not distancing was the ball and the back of D.C. United’s net. The U got four goals off of three different players.

The scoring came fast and early in the match. Seven minutes into the game Jamiro Monteiro was on the left side of the net lined up for a corner kick. As fans probably know it has been years since the Union scored off a corner. Welp Kacper Przybylko reset that clock after getting the ball into the net. That also wasn’t his last goal of the night. Chester’s friendly neighborhood ghost got his second goal in the sixteenth minute.

Union homegrown player, Brenden Aaronson, also had a good evening. Aaronson was all over the field going from the outside flanks to the middle of the field. After a slow start in the first half, he started to be involved in a lot of the attacks. Aaronson has plenty of chances and would eventually convert a shot for a goal in the sixty first minute.

One person I can’t wait to see your rating on is Jim Curtin. From past experiences it seems like Curtin would change the game plan once they went up 2-0. I would feel like he would instruct the players to sit back and defend the lead. This was a different feeling, it felt like Curtin was committed to the attack and continued to have them throw numbers forward. In my opinion it was a lovely sight to see.
