WPSL update: Colonial Conference to come down to last day

SJEB FC and Washington Dutch Lions will play for all the marbles today

Carl Gulbish

It all comes down to this.

SJEB FC will host the Washington Dutch Lions in a do-or-die final match today at 7 p.m. The match at Total Turf in Pitman will decide the champion of the Colonial Conference, with the top three slots in the league all to be determined.

Currently, neither team is actually in first in the conference. CAFC Ospreys have that distinction, having earned 17 points through all eight of their matches. The Dutch Lions sit a point adrift with 16, while SJEB are one point further down at 15 heading into the crucial matchup.

Unfortunately for the onlooking Ospreys, they cannot win the title, despite starting the day in first place. Both teams in action can leapfrog them with a win, and the Dutch Lions’ superior goal difference is enough to ensure that they only need a draw.

This will set up a fantastic final day, in which the home team will need to push for a win. However, the odds are with the visitors to get at least a point, with their only other meeting this year finishing as a 3-1 decision to the Dutch Lions at the capital. The game will be streamed live on Eleven Sports.

Meanwhile in the Mid Atlantic Conference, there was a significantly less theatrical end to the season, but Penn Fusion won’t mind.

The four-time conference champions (soon to be five) went on a rampage this season, finishing 9-1-0, a full 10 points above the closest competitor, Lehigh Valley Tempest.

In fact, the gaps were so big in the Mid Atlantic Conference, that Penn Fusion clinched the title all the way back on June 26 with an emphatic 5-0 result against Hershey FC.
