Update: the match and Wrexham AFC’s U.S. training tour is off due to growing Covid-19 concerns in the UK.

It’s not every day that WMMR drops Philadelphia Union news but actor Rob McElhenney did just that on the Preston & Steve Show Friday morning, announcing that the Welsh club he co-owns will visit Subaru Park for a friendly with the Philadelphia Union on July 29.

McElhenney, a Philly native known for his starring roles on long-running FX comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and the Apple TV+ comedy Mythic Quest, called into the show to share the big news.

He and actor Ryan Reynolds made global headlines earlier this year when they took over the club that plays in the fifth tier of English football league system. FX is producing a docuseries about the actors’ purchase of the club called Welcome to Wrexham.

Tickets will be free, but those attending will be asked to bring food donations for Philabundance.

“We’re doing it in association with Philabundance, but also to raise awareness for CORA (Servicees), to raise awareness for the Union, to raise awareness for Wrexham,” McElhenney said. “It’s going to be a big, massive, massive event.”

McElhenney said his wife, Kaitlin Olson, and several other members of the It’s Always Sunny cast will be attendance. Reynolds, who will be shooting a movie, will be “making every effort that he possibly can to be there,” he said.
