Report: Philadelphia Union eyeing Hungarian national team midfielder

Hungarian national team attacking midfielder/striker Dániel Gazdag is reportedly on the radar of the Philadelphia Union.

The 25-year-old, who has 13 goals and 5 assists in 27 matches for Budapest Honvéd FC this season and has earned six caps for the Hungary national team.

A report from Hungary mentions the Philadelphia Union as one of the “main applicants” (via Google Translate) for Gazdag’s services.

Sporting Director Ernst Tanner said last week that they had a new player coming in and the team acquired a ninth international spot from Sporting Kansas City yesterday for $200,000 in general allocation money. It would make sense if Gazgag is the player they are targeting to fill that spot.

Gazgag is primarily an attacking midfielder, which has been considered a position of need entering the season but he can also provide depth at the forward spot, which has been thin this season so far because of injuries to Sergio Santos, Cory Burke and Ilsinho. His value on Transfermarkt is listed at $1.10 million and his contract is through 2023 with his current club.

UPDATE: Jonathan Tannenwald of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Union are indeed pursuing Gazdag but that it might take a while to finalize because his team is currently in a relegation fight and he will likely be with Hungary for the European Championship kicking off in June.
