The Philadelphia Union II returned to the pitch for their first game of 2021 in a friendly with West Chester United at YSC Sports on Saturday and picked up right where they left off in the fall with a 3-1 win.

Sean Bettenhausen scored a must see goal to double the lead after Jack Jasinski opened the scoring early and Anthony Ramirez converted a PK after Lucas Mellor put one in from the penalty spot for West Chester United after Levi Maruca drew the penalty.

The teams played three periods instead of two halves in the match, which was also the first for Marlon LeBlanc since officially being named head coach. He was appointed interim head coach last August during the USL Championship season.

The starting XI for Union II had Mitch Budler in goal, Anton Sorenson at left back and Jackson Gilman at right back with Ben Ofeimu and Mansour Diop pairing in the middle. Dante Huckaby wore the armband and played the 6, Sean Bettenhausen, Anthony Ramirez and Selmir Miscic were in the midfield and Jack Jasinski and Shanyder Borgelin were up top.

A different keeper played each of the periods with former Pittsburgh Riverhounds goalkeeper Anthony Mwembia and Ben Martino each getting a period. Ian Abbey, Sam Jones and Jake Spadafora came on as substitutes.

The three keepers had a strong performance on the day with a number of big saves, including the stop in the video below Martino made to deny Spencer Burkhardt a breakaway goal.

Union II hasn’t released a schedule of any additional upcoming friendlies and the new MLS reserve league schedule, in addition to details of the competition, has also not been released.
