Villanova played the role of spoiler in their second straight overtime match at St. John’s on Saturday with Josh Belluz delivering the game-winner in overtime to lift the Wildcats to their first victory of 2021.
Belluz scored in the 95th minute off an assist from Lyam Mackinnon to seal the 1-0 victory. The goal was just the second of the season for Nova (1-4-0) and the first since Branden Johns scored in the 22nd minute against La Salle in the season opener a day before Valentine’s Day.
”I thought we had a breakthrough with our effort and attitude against Providence even though the result wasn’t there,” head coach Tom Carlin was quoted saying after the match. “We’ve told the guys that just because the result isn’t there doesn’t mean you aren’t making progress. You need to keep chipping away and I thought they did that this week. I’m really proud of them.”
Villanova returns to Big East action Wednesday when they face Seton Hall at 6:30 p.m.
La Salle improves to 3-1 with big day from rookie Junior Nare to beat Drexel
Rookie Junior Nare had a brace and Nigel Buckley had a goal to lead the Explorers to a 3-1 win over Drexel and improve their record to 3-1-0. Elliott Swiggert had a goal for the Dragons (2-2-0) in the 78th minute.
La Salle begins Atlantic 10 play Saturday at home against Rhode Island while Drexel kicks off their Colonial Athletic play at Hofstra and Saint Joseph’s hosts Delaware Wednesday for the Blue Hens season opener.
