It’s been a few days since the Union launched their second kit to the world, and the reaction has ultimately been positive. For years when the Union would release their secondary kit, many people would complain with “Not another white t-shirt.”
Welp the U really have outdone itself with releasing the first kit that came out of consultation with Union Creators’ Collective, and there is not an ounce of white in the kit. Instead it leans heavily on the colors of the region the team calls home. Taking the blue and gold colors from the flags of the Delaware valley. The Union’s Chief Marketing Officer Doug Vosik said they “wanted to shock the soccer world.” What better way to do it than put lighting bolts on your players.
With the kit announcement on Wednesday, social media was going crazy with mostly positive vibes and a few negative ones. Some people saying it’s great because, we have had a boring kit for so long. On the opposite side of the spectrum, a person said they are buying it because it will go down as one of the worst kits in history.
Below is a collection of some of the responses Union fans had about the kit.
For the Kit
I love it fwiw. I like the color and the electricity lightning bolt thing. It’s a cool tie in with the Ben Franklin thing we got going on .

I want one of these, and I’m a TFC fan

I am upset at how good that new Union kit looks.

Against the kit
I’ll buy it because it’s going to go down as one of the worst kits in history

Might be the graphic designer in me but not really a fan of the new Union kit, the idea is there but the execution is lacking in my opinion.

Am I the only one who finds the new Phila Union jersey awful ?
— Lucas (@LukeJCG) February 3, 2021
And one response with a little bit of optimism.
Initial reaction is ew. It’ll grow on me though as they all do

My thoughts exactly. Also, while I may not LOVE the new Union kit, I love the CONCEPT of the new kit... let's be bold, creative and have fun. https://t.co/jwzKMPuMVC

As you can see in the imbalance of tweets, it is a little harder to find negative tweets about the kit. It seems like a majority of the fan base is extremely excited to not have another white shirt.
In my opinion hopefully, like the last tweet above, more teams start to be bold and creative with their kits. I mean, who doesn’t love the bold denim kit of the U.S. mens national team from ‘94? Lets hope this moves a lot of merchandise, that way teams across the league will see it is time to take the next steps and move away from cookie cutter and into a unique brand identity.
Now that time has passed, we want to hear your thoughts. In the comment section below let us know about your first reaction, and if it has grown on you since.
