Villanova’s scoring draught had reached 300 minutes to start the season when head coach Chris McLain went to his bench and sent grad student Sam Rosette into a home match against Saint Joseph’s in the rain Sunday afternoon.
Minutes later, Rosette got in behind the Hawks defense thanks to a lovely line-splitting pass from Makayla Stadler and put the finishing touches on a goal 15 months in the making. The Wildcats last scored on November 3, 2019 in a 1-0 win over DePaul.
They had started the season with three straight losses to Philly Soccer Six opponents La Salle, Temple and Drexel while being outscored 8-0.
Rosette’s first half goal — her fifth in a Wildcats uniform — held up thanks to another first for the season, a clean sheet for goalkeeper Megan McClay.
The confidence booster comes at a good time with Big East play starting for Villanova at St. John’s on Thursday.
Temple Earns First American Athletic Point with Draw
Roisin McGovern’s second half equalizer was enough to earn the Owls their first point in American Athletic play with a 1-1 draw against East Carolina at Temple Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Marissa DiGenova recorded the assist on the goal and Kamryn Stablein had another active day in goal, saving 7 shots. Stablein has made 33 saves through Temple’s first four games.
La Salle Improves to 3-0 with Win Over Drexel
Jenna Soriano converted a penalty just after halftime and Jillian DeSantis made six saves to secure a clean sheet in her collegiate debut in a 1-0 win for La Salle over Drexel on a rainy Sunday night.
Three games in the season, the Explorers have now outscored opponents 14-0. They hit the run to begin Atlantic 10 play on the road at UMass on Friday.
