A pair of 1-1 draws led to shootout defeats for both the Philadelphia Union U17 and U15 teams in their final day of Generation adidas Cup qualification in Utah on Monday.
Both teams were within striking distance of winning their qualifying group heading into the day but were unable to outlast rivals New York Red Bulls in the second meeting between the two teams in the competition.
The U15s dropped their second shootout of the tournament in the 3-2 shootout loss after the 1-1 draw and were eliminated from the competition after finishing with 11 points, four behind the Red Bulls.
The U17s missed out on qualifying for Division 1 of the finals after an identical 3-2 shootout loss following a 1-1 draw with the Red Bulls. They will compete in Division 2 in the finals in Frisco, Texas in April.
While the shootout losses — four between the two teams — marked a disappointing end to the qualifying campaign that began in Chester back in October, there were plenty of positives to take away from the trip to Utah, especially for a U17 team that was missing some key players to injuries, international duty and Union II training camp in Florida.
The U17s finished qualifying with a W-D-L record of 3-2-1, a plus-7 goal differential and the most goals for (16) of any team in qualifying. The U15s finished with an identical 3-2-1 record, a plus-4 goal differential and tied for third in goals for (15) behind and FC Dallas (19) and Seattle Sounders (21).
