New Philadelphia Union center back Jakob Glesnes will be the seventh player in franchise history to wear the No. 5 jersey and the first since Olivier Mbaizo wore it in 2018.
Glesnes was officially announced as the Union’s latest offseason signing on Friday afternoon and was holding a No. 5 jersey in a video introduction the team posted online.
It’s the number he wore throughout his time at Strømsgodset IF dating back to 2015 after wearing 28, 23 and 3 in the earlier stages of his career.
Shavar Thomas wore No. 5 during the Union’s inaugural season, followed by Carlos Valdes in 2011, Greg Jordan from 2012-2013, Vincent Nogueira during his three years with the team and Oguchi Onyewu in 2017. Mbaizo swapped No. 5 for 15 last season.
