Rooney sees red in D.C. United loss

Barring a successful appeal, D.C. United will be short-handed on Saturday in Chester

For much of the season, D.C. United has been neck and neck with the Philadelphia Union in the standings, but they’ll come into their showdown in Chester on Saturday smarting from another loss, further down the table and missing one of their star players to red card suspensions.

Wayne Rooney, who we learned will be leaving after the season a couple days after the Union beat D.C. 5-1 at Audi Field, was sent off in the 24th minute for a foul on Cristian Casseres Jr. before a corner kick was taken on Wednesday night against the New York Red Bulls. The card was issued after video review.

The game went to 10v10 in first half stoppage time when Amrek Taro was sent off for a second yellow after pulling Paul Arriola down. The score ended up 2-1 in favor of the Red Bulls after a 59th minute Daniel Royer penalty kick following a controversial penalty call that stood after VAR scrutiny.

The loss was D.C. United’s fourth in their last six games and saw them slip to fifth place after spending all but four of the first 20 weeks of the season in either first or second place.
