Yellow card accumulation and an ongoing injury will keep two of the Philadelphia Union’s best players this season out of the lineup against Montreal Impact tonight.
Left back Kai Wagner is serving a one-game suspension after picking up his fifth yellow card last weekend against the Chicago Fire. Midfielder Jamiro Monteiro is listed as out on the injury report from yesterday. Head coach Jim Curtin said on Wednesday that his star midfielder could miss up to two more weeks from the ankle sprain sustained from a red card challenge by Sacha Kljestan on July 3.
The Cape Verde international was training to the side earlier this week at the Power Training Complex.
Sergio Santos is out for the game with a right high ankle sprain while a right quad strain forced goalkeeper Matt Freese to withdraw from the MLS Homegrown game. Olivier Mbaizo is still working his way back from a left knee meniscus/LCL sprain and Michee Ngalina, who was seen training to the side with Monteiro on Wednesday, is listed as questionable.
Curtin has four options at left back to start in place of Wagner. He could start Matt Real, Fabinho or RJ Allen on the left side or move Ray Gaddis over to the left and start Allen on the right side. If Allen does start it will be his Philadelphia Union debut.
Brenden Aaronson has filled in for Monteiro, playing as the left-sided midfielder in the diamond but Anthony Fontana is also an option for Curtin to start. The 19-year-old’s last and only start in league play came in his MLS debut on March 3, 2018.
