Ray Gaddis (age 29) has been the veteran on the defensive line since the beginning of the season for the Philadelphia Union. Ray has been a strong force to help out the other young defenders, Auston Trusty (age 20), Jack Elliot (age 23) and the new face in the left back position Kai Wagner (age 22).
Following a two-game suspension for Wagner, Olivier Mbaizo (age 21) had his chance to show Jim Curtin and the Philadelphia Union fans what he is made of at right back with Gaddis sliding over to left back. After a not so strong performance against the Vancouver Whitecaps, Mbaizo came out strong at home against FC Cincinnati.
On the Cameroonian’s side of the pitch, the Union were able to keep possession and continue to press Cincinnati. Olivier finished the night registering an assist on Kacper Przybylko’s winner.
Now Jim Curtin has a tough decision on who should be starting at right back for the defense. Should the Union keep the veteran leadership, or look toward the future?
