Marco Fabián part of Mexico’s preliminary Gold Cup squad

Fabián will be part of El Tri for friendlies against Venezuela on June 5 and Ecuador on June 9

Philadelphia Union midfielder Marco Fabián is part of Mexico’s 29-player preliminary Gold Cup roster, El Tri head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino unveiled on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old veteran of two World Cups with El Tri will be part of the squad for friendlies against Venezuela on June 5 in Atlanta and Ecuador on June 9 in Arlington, Texas. Martino will cut the roster down to 23 players for the team that will compete in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The Gold Cup will be held June 15-July 7. Two quarterfinal matches will be played at Lincoln Financial Field on June 30.

Mexico will be missing four key players with LAFC striker Carlos Vela, West Ham United striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and FC Porto teammates Hector Herrera and Jesus Manuel Corona not making the trip.
