David Accam and the Philadelphia Union are looking for their third straight win tonight, when they’ll host FC Dallas. FCD are coming off a 4-2 win in Salt Lake City, and they’ve also won two in a row.
Dallas has made headlines for starting five Homegrown Players on multiple occasions so far this season, and they’re expected to do so tonight as well. Two of them, Paxton Pomykal and Jesús Ferreira, netted their first career goals last week. Pomykal and Ferreira form part of a Dallas attack that features Michael Barrios and summer signing Pablo Aránguiz. With no dominant goalscorer in that group, goals have come by committee thus far. Dallas has had seven different goalscorers, tied for the most in MLS.
18-year-old Edwin Cerrillo made his pro debut less than a month ago, and he’s now coming off two straight starts in defensive midfield. He and Carlos Gruezo will be tasked with shutting down a Union midfield likely to feature Marco Fabián, Alejandro Bedoya, Brenden Aaronson, and Haris Medunjanin.
With the Union on a good run of form, don’t expect much change, if any, in the starting lineup. David Accam has earned his place up top, but both Cory Burke and Fafa Picault have failed to find the scoresheet this season. Either of those two could partner Accam tonight.
In the midfield, Brenden Aaronson has looked more than comfortable alongside Alejandro Bedoya. New signing Jamiro Monteiro was signed to fill that spot, but it may be some time before Aaronson is taken out of the lineup.
The center back pairing of Jack Elliott and Auston Trusty has turned it around, posting consecutive clean sheets after conceding six goals in the first three games. They’ll have their hands full with a very balanced Dallas attack.
