All eyes were on Brenden Aaronson Sunday night. The 18-year-old South Jersey native had his first Major League Soccer start against the MLS Cup Champions in front of 45,000 fans at Mercedez-Benz Stadium.
His first start came after being in the 18 but not seeing the field in the first two games of the season. He replaced Marco Fabian, who was suspended after picking up a red card against Sporting Kansas City.
Aaronson made his presence known throughout the game, creating high pressure and giving continuous hustle. He left his mark on the game in a big way in the 47th minute. Right after both teams came back to the field and started the second half of the match, Brenden took the ball and dribbled across the field to take a shot on goal, the ball deflected off one of Atlanta’s defenders to end up in the back of the net. Not bad for high school senior in his first MLS start. Aaronson would later be subbed off and replaced by Ilsinho.
Brenden’s overall rating in our community vote this week was 4.66 out 5, the highest a player has receive this season. The previous high was Kai Wagner’s 4.06 average rating from the SKC game. The overall score for Brenden is also 587.
Through three weeks, Andre Blake holds the highest score total so far 1,396. Wagner was second this week with a rating of 4.06 and Blake was third with a 4.04.
At the bottom of this week’s poll, is Cory Burke, with an average rating of 2.02. The fans seem to be wanting more out of Cory after having some great games last year. I still believe that he can do great things in the game, but let’s hope he can get used to this new system and get going again while away on international duty with the Reggae Boyz.
The Philadelphia Union face Columbus Crew this Saturday night at Talen Energy Stadium in Chester and after picking up their first point in Atlanta are still looking for their first win of the season.
