Derrick Jones called up to United States U23 team for friendlies in Spain

He’s the fifth Union player to receive a call-up for the international break

MLS: Philadelphia Union at Seattle Sounders FC Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

Add Derrick Jones to the list of Philadelphia Union players who will be away on international duty and unavailable for this weekend’s game against Columbus Crew SC.

Jones has been called into the United States U23 team for a pair of friendlies in Spain against Egpyt (March 22) and the Netherlands (March 24), the team announced on Tuesday.

Auston Trusty was not on the call-up list, which is more likely an indication of the Union’s thinning numbers and need for him to stay home and play this weekend than a lack of desire on new head coach Jason Kreis to call him into the squad.

The gathering is the first for the U23 team ahead of qualification for the 2020 Olympics. The tournament will be played in late 2019 or early 2020 with two teams advancing to Tokyo.

Four other Union players have received international call-ups: Andre Blake and Cory Burke (Jamaica), Warren Creavalle (Guyana) and Matt Real (United States U20s).

The Crew will also be missing a number of players for Saturday’s match at Talen Energy Stadium. Wil Trapp and Gyasi Zardes will be with the USMNT (Zack Steffen had to withdraw with a knee injury) and Justin Meram (Iraq) and Waylon Francis (Costa Rica) will also be on international duty.
