Bethlehem Steel FC passed their first test of preseason, keeping D.C. United off the board in the first half and falling just 1-0 to the MLS side in a preseason scrimmage in Clearwater, Florida on Saturday morning.
Steel FC head coach Brendan Burke used 22 players for the match, including one player from the first team roster, five from his own roster, three trialists and 13 players from the Philadelphia Union Academy.
One of the academy players — Shaynder Borgelin — ended up playing for both teams, returning to the field to finish the game with D.C. United.
Third round draft pick Shinya Kadono scored the game’s only goal. Kadono led Cal Berkeley in goals last season with 12.
The three trialists for Steel FC included two internationals, 18-year-old left back Walter Cortes from Costa Rica and 21-year-old midfielder Chavany Willis from Jamaica. The third was 18-year-old North Jersey native John Murphy. The former PDA and New York Red Bulls Academy midfielder recently left Clemson after making 11 appearances as a freshman in the fall.
Tonny Temple, who made seven appearances for the Steel last season as an attacking player, subbed in for Nathan Harriel at right back. Harriel, a U.S. youth international, recently joined the academy from Florida club Chargers SC, which the Steel will scrimmage on Tuesday before returning to Philadelphia.
