There’s been a lot of storylines that have been repeated this season, but ones that have been shared repeatedly go something like this:
- This is the best team in Philadelphia Union history
- This is the deepest team in Philadelphia Union history
- Ernst Tanner is the team’s savior
- #ThatsSoUnion is a thing of the past
There are more than that of course, but these have come up repeatedly in news coverage and discussions online.
There’s a reason for this of course. The Union statistically had their best season in franchise history despite going through a fair share of injury problems and off-the-field concerns while also losing one of their top goal-scorers from 2018 to a visa issue. They also saw immediate return on some but not all of the moves made by new Sporting Director Ernst Tanner.
Somehow, the slow starts and finishes that have plagued the team over the years were eerily similar — their only back-to-back losses this season came in the first two and last two games of the season.
