As the Union prepare for their first home playoff game in eight years, we will take a look back on this season’s Rate The U Results and the players who have been rated highest by you, the Brotherly Game community.
With no real surprise, Jack Elliott is the Union player who has received the most awards for Man of the Match over the 2019 season. Elliott has been a standout player this year and has been one that has impressed me the most. Elliott is a central defender for the Union who many didn’t expect to start this season. But because of an injury to Mark McKenzie before the season started Elliott had his chance to prove his worth.
Elliott received the highest rating on eight occasions this season. He was rewarded earlier in the year when his contract with Philadelphia was extended through 2021 with a club option for 2022. Elliott played every minute of the MLS season with a total of 3,060 game minutes. Striker Kacper Przybyłko also comes in second this year with seven Man of the Match awards and Przybyłko was also a finalist for the MLS Comeback Player of the Year Award.
Even though Jack won the most Man of the Match awards this season, he was not the overall highest-rated player. Jamiro Monteiro came in first with the highest average rating on the Philadelphia Union.
Monteiro ended up receiving an average rating of 3.99 out of 5, while Elliot received a 3.95. Monteiro is an international player born in The Netherlands. Monteiro was loaned out to the Philadelphia Union during the 2019 season from FC Metz. Jamiro was only voted Man of the Match twice but maintained a consistently high average rating.
Monteiro suffered an injury to his ankle halfway through the season after Orlando’s Sacha Kljestan stepped on his ankle while coming in for a hard challenge. Sidelined for four games, Jamiro presence was missed in the midfield and Philadelphia appeared sloppy without their ball-winning midfielder on the pitch.
Looking at the bottom of the ratings we will find some of the highly anticipated signings, such as Sergio Santos (2.97), Andrew Wooten (2.79), and Marco Fabián (3.11). With the playoff push starting Sunday afternoon against the rival New York Red Bulls, it’s time for these players to prove their worth. If not the team will have to rely on the players that no one saw coming: Jamiro Monteiro, Jack Elliott and Kacper Przybyłko.
