Game Thread: Union lose 3-0 in Colorado

Check back for updates as the game is going on!

MLS: Philadelphia Union at Colorado Rapids Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

Full Time

The Union fail to convert yet another chance in stoppage time, as Ilsinho took too much time to shoot and the Rapids defender was able to block the shot after Howard failed to deal with a Union free kick.

As good as the Union looked in the first half, they looked absolutely dreadful in the second half.

Hat Trick for Domnique Badji

The Union fail to deal with Badji once again, as Elliot couldn’t deal with the onrushing Rapids forward and Badji’s shot beat Blake to the far post. Absolutely nothing that Blake could have done, but the defense ahead of Blake should feel shame for allowing Badji that much time and space.

Third Sub

Anthony Fontana comes on in the 82nd minute for Borek Dockal.

Second Sub

Cory Burke replaced Matt Real, and the team goes to a 3-5-2 in order to catch up. About 10 minutes too late if you ask me.

The Union have looked poor in the second half, unable to string passes together.

Earlier, Deklan Wynne was booked for a petulant foul on David Accam.

First Sub

Ilsinho comes on for Herbers in the 64th minute

Second Goal for Colorado

Badji was in the right place at the right time to put in another goal into the back of the net.

Goal for Colorado

In the 53rd minute the Union were penalized for wasting their chances in the first half, as the Rapids scored on a corner kick. Dominque Badji was able to shoot the ball into the back of the net from a flick on from Tommy Smith. Jack Elliot was unable to stop Badji from getting a shot off at the far post.

Halftime

Andre Blake made a remarkable save in the end of the first half from a Rapids corner kick and the follow up shot was cleared off the line by Matthew Real. A good job by the Union to stop the chance after dominating much of the first half without anything to show for it.

A good job by the young defense of the Union to hold limit the Rapids to very few chances and to dominate possession of the ball. The only thing that you would like to see change, from a Union point of view, would obviously be a goal.

First Half Hour

Another open header was mishit by CJ Sapong from a corner kick, as the Union continued to bully the Rapids from corner kicks.

The Union’s defense did well to smother any attack from the Rapids, and the Union kept the pressure on, albeit with fewer chances than they did in the first 15 minutes.

First 15 minutes

A couple decent chances for the Union without a goal, as the Union seemed to dominate possession.

4’ Early chance for Philadelphia as CJ Sapong got his head to a ball in the six-yard box, but his effort went just over the net.

The Philadelphia Union are in the Centennial State to take on the Colorado Rapids in Commerce City, just north of Denver, at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

The Union look to extend their undefeated streak while the Rapids are looking for their first win of the season.

Starting Lineups

Jim Curtin gives the nod to 18-year-old Drexel Hill native Matt Real at left back. That means the Union back line tonight has an 18, 19, 22 and 24 year old.
