Tonny Temple’s strong form during preseason with Bethlehem Steel FC carried over into his play for the Union U19s on the road last Saturday with his brace the difference in a 2-0 win over Cedar Stars Academy - Monmouth.
Temple, the team’s second-leading scorer, scored on each side of halftime to bring his season total to nine. Tomas Romero had the clean sheet with Olu Ogunwale, Ramzi Qawasmy, Brendan Hanrahan and Nyk Sessock all going 90 minutes on the back line front of him. The match also marked the U19 debut for Shanyder Borgelin, who came off the bench in the 80th minute.
The win was the second with new head coach Kevin Coleman in charge and extended the team’s unbeaten streak to nine dating back to their last loss to Bethesda SC on the road in November.
At 12-2-3, the U19s have the sixth best win percentage nationally, but they remain six points behind Atlantic Division leaders New York Red Bulls, which are 15-0-0 with two games in hand on the Union.
In other Development Academy action:
- The U17s twice blew a one-goal lead, conceding an equalizer in the 86th minute to drop two points on the road at Cedar Stars. Antonio Ducrot had both goals for the home side, canceling out Aboubacar Camara’s opening goal and Axel Picazo’s 83rd minute strike. The Union played the final 37 minutes down a man after Camara was sent off in the 53rd minute. The goals were the seventh of the season for Camara and the eighth for Picazo. The team next returns to Generation adidas Cup action in Texas with matches against Club Tijuana, Colorado Rapids and Montreal Impact.
- With leading goal scorers Patrick Bohui and Selmir Miscic away on international duty, Nick Pariano provided the lone goal in a 1-0 win for the Union U15 team over Cedar Stars and Jason Grandizio went the full 80 minutes to record the clean sheet. The goal was the third of the season for Pariano and the win extended the U15s unbeaten streak to 12 dating back to a loss to Bethesda SC in September.
- The U14s had a pair of shutout wins over the weekend, beating Cedar Stars Monmouth 5-0 on the road Saturday and Met Oval 3-0 back at home on Sunday. Anthony DeFilippo had a hat trick on Saturday and Anthony Derk and Marcello Mazzola added his fourth goal for the team on Saturday behind a clean sheet from Logan Gildea. Jackson Gilman, Nelson Pierre and Quinn Sullivan scored the goals and Owen Moore had the clean sheet in goal on Sunday. Pierre’s goal was his team-leading 10th of the season.
- After a 4-0 win over Cedar Stars Monmouth on Saturday, the U13s had their four-game shutout streak snapped six minutes in and had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Met Oval at home on Sunday when they conceded again in the 67th minute. Jordi Guifarro found the back of the net for the eighth time this season and Marcelo Mazzola added his 11th (15 total between the U13 and U14 teams). Connor Budniak, Jordi Guifarro, Dylan Lacey and Dominic Wilson had the goals in Saturday’s road victory behind a clean sheet from Noah Schlosser.
