After the first period ended scoreless, both sides got on the board in the second. CJ Sapong earned and converted a penalty to put the Union ahead after 18 minutes.
Derrick Etienne Jr. tied up the game 18 minutes later.
The third period saw a flurry of goals. New York struck first, taking the lead five minutes in through Alex Muyl. The Union equalized in the 26th minute, but Armando Moreno put his side ahead in the 29th. 17-year-old Brenden Aaronson got the Union back on equal footing in the 35th, six minutes before Ben Mines scored the winner for the Red Bulls.
Thus far, six of the seven goalscorers have been announced, with the Union’s second goal unaccounted for to this point.
The Union’s first preseason match is against D.C. United on February 17th, per their website. They have scrimmages lined up against the University of South Florida on the 6th and against the Chicago Fire on the 8th.
