Steel FC bring Zambian youth international in on loan

Left back Prosper Chiluya has been on a tear for his country lately.

Bethlehem Steel FC announced Tuesday that Prosper Chiluya has joined the club on loan from Zambian club Kafue Celtic FC.

The 19-year-old Zambian left back has made waves lately at the youth international level, starting with the 2017 Africa U20 Cup of Nations. In the ACON, Chiluya played every minute of Zambia’s five-game campaign and had a big part in a stalwart defense that only allowed two goals in the entire tournament. Offensively he played a part as well, assisting on the winning goal in the semifinal against South Africa.

Later in 2017, Prosper proved his worth again for his home country, this time at the FIFA U20 World Cup in South Korea. Again playing every minute at left back, Prosper helped his side go top of Group C by defeating Iran and Portugal. Advancing to the knockout round, Chiluya was on the field for every minute of the 4-3 Zambia win in a thriller against Germany that went to extra time, Zambia’s final win in the tournament before bowing out to Italy.

Steel FC head coach Brendan Burke on his new full back:

“We are happy to add another very young player with good recent youth international experience. Prosper is already adjusting well having just arrived in the United States and we hope that he can push the other young outside backs in the club this season.”

Prosper got in on Friday last week and will in fact be not just in attendence but also playing along side his new teammates tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. as Steel take on Penn FC at YSC Sports on Saturday.

His addition to the 2018 roster brings the number of players on USL deals to 10, two shy of the minimum required. He will occupy an international roster spot, giving the Steel four of seven slots filled and 11 of the 15 international slots for the Philadelphia Union organization.
