Union to open season at home against Toronto FC, on the road at SKC

Home opener scheduled for 1 p.m. at Talen Energy Stadium

MLS: Toronto FC at Philadelphia Union Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The 2017 MLS Cup champions will be coming to Talen Energy Stadium on March 2 to open the 2019 Philadelphia Union season, the league announced on Thursday.

Toronto FC and the blue and gold will kick off at 1 p.m.

The Union will be in Kansas City, Kansas to play Sporting Kansas City nine days later at Children’s Mercy Park.

Kickoff for that Sunday afternoon game is 3 p.m. eastern time.

Toronto FC had a down season after winning MLS Cup and advancing to the final of the CONCACAF Champions League, finishing 14 points behind the Union in ninth place despite beating the Union twice by a combined 5-0 score. Sporting Kansas City won the Western Conference and finished third in the Supporters’ Shield in 2018, but lost to a reserve-heavy Union team at Talen Energy Stadium 2-0 on September 23.

MLS released only the home openers on Thursday, but with FC Cincinnati entering the league we know that the Union will play one game against the 12 Western Conference teams and a home and away game against the other 11 Eastern Conference teams to complete a 34-game schedule.
