Area college programs prepare for D1 and D3 NCAA Tournament

Messiah, West Chester University and Franklin & Marshall will all host games this weekend

Messiah’s No. 1-ranked men’s team, both West Chester University teams and Franklin & Marshall’s men will all be starting their NCAA Tournament campaigns at home this weekend as the national tournaments for Division II and Division III open.

Messiah, the defending national champions on the men’s side, open the D3 tournament on Saturday morning at home against Baruch. The Falcons finished the regular season at 16-0-3 and ranked No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The women’s team from Messiah is traveling to Rochester, New York to open the tournament on Saturday morning against Centenary.

Millersville and West Chester University also have both teams still with games to play in the D2 tournament. The Millersville men are playing defending champions Charleston in West Virginia on Saturday afternoon while the women travel to Bloomsburg to play East Stroudsburg on Friday afternoon. The West Chester women are hosting the winner of Kutztown and West Virginia Wesleyan at Rockwell Field on Sunday at noon, a day after the men host Notre Dame Ohio at 1 p.m.

Wilmington University plays Le Moyne on Friday afternoon in Syracuse in the other D2 tournament game with local implications.

A dozen games in the men’s and women’s D3 Tournaments will feature teams from the greater Philadelphia region.

In addition to both of Messiah’s teams, Cabrini, Rowan, Susquehanna, Penn State Berks and Arcadia are all playing Saturday in the women’s tournament while Haverford, Elizabethtown, Franklin & Marshall, Eastern and Penn State Abington are playing Saturday in the men’s tournament.
