West Chester United moved one step closer to qualifying for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup proper on Sunday with a 3-0 win over local rival Ukrainian Nationals.
Chas Wilson and Kyle Martyn each had a goal and an assist to lead the Predators and defender John Peter Nolan also found the back of the net in the match between United Soccer League of Pennsylvania rivals.
John Paletar made four saves to record the clean sheet for West Chester, which will play their third straight road game in qualifying on either November 17 at 7:30 p.m. at St. John’s University against the Queens-based New York Pancyprian Freedoms. The Freedoms advanced on PKs after a scoreless draw with Jackson Lions FC.
Martyn opened the scoring in the 31st minute on a give and go with Wilson, who made it 3-0 in the 65th minute off an assist from Matt Greer after Martyn found the head of Nolan off a corner kick 10 minutes after halftime. The Ukies went down to 10 men in the 81st minute when Martin Dell’Arciprete was shown a straight red card.
U.S. Soccer has not announced the number of local qualifying rounds that will be played for the 2019 competition. There were three played for the 2018 competition and two played each of the two previous years.
