Union vs. Red Bulls: Preview, projected lineups, and how to watch

Playoff implications make this an even bigger game than usual.

MLS: U.S. Open Cup-New York Red Bulls vs Philadelphia Union Derik Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

With a postseason berth already secured, a home playoff game is on the line as the Union host the New York Red Bulls on Sunday afternoon. There are even bigger implications for the Red Bulls, who sit only one point off the Supporters’ Shield with two games to go.

Both teams are coming in hot, each having won three of their last four. They’ve only met once this season (a scoreless draw in Harrison) but their most recent matchup came in U.S. Open Cup play. The Union claimed a 2-1 victory in that one to advance to the quarterfinals.

Despite a few good results against them thus far, this will be no easy game for the Union. The Red Bulls can feasibly take home two trophies over the next month and a half. A win for the home team would be a massive statement: If the Union show that they can take down the East’s elite, a deep run into the MLS Cup playoffs suddenly becomes much more believable.
