Philadelphia Union defender Oguchi Onyewu was subbed out in the first half during Saturday’s loss to New York City FC after clashing heads with Maxime Chanot in the 38th minute. Onyewu shared a picture of a black eye he picked up this morning on his Instagram Story:

The initial hit didn’t seem too bad live, but it quickly swelled up, causing him to be subbed off in the 39th minute. Gooch was replaced on the pitch by Richie Marquez.
Turns out, a soccer ball-sized welt under your eye is not ideal as Gooch comes out for Marquez.

There is no word as to how long this could keep Onyewu out for, but the Union do not have a MLS game until next Sunday against the New York Red Bulls, so unless he turns out to have suffered a concussion as well as this nasty shiner. If it does indeed turn out to be a concussion, he could miss next Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup match against the Harrisburg City Islanders. We wish the best to Gooch and hope for a speedy recovery!
