West Chester United wins regional U23 title

West Chester United topped Annandale United to capture the crown for the second straight year

For the second straight year, West Chester United are U23 regional champions.

West Chester beat Virginia club Annandale United 3-2 on Sunday at Ukrainian American Sports Center in Horsham, Pa. to capture the USASA Region 1 championship.

La Salle senior midfielder Matt Robinson (Lansdale, Pa.) recorded a brace and Philadelphia Union Academy grad Matt Greer (Chadds Ford, Pa. / Dartmouth) added a goal to lead a team featuring a number of college soccer players with ties to the Union Academy and the region.

In addition to Greer, Union Academy alums Chris Gomez (Lafayette), Brett Glasco (West Chester University) and Andrew Verdi (Michigan) were on the squad. Greer and Gomez, along with Christian Williams (FIU), Evan Vare (Lafayette), Ryan Fincher (Franklin & Marshall) and Will Smith (Lehigh) also play on West Chester United’s NPSL team.

The United States Adult Soccer Association only holds regional finals for the U23 competition.

Junior Lone Star FC came up short in their bid for the Region 1 Amateur Cup title (Fritz Marth Trophy) on Saturday evening in Horsham, falling 3-0 to New York club Landsdowne Bhoys. The Bhoys also took home the Werner Fricker Cup final while Maryland club Christos FC captured the over-30 Gerhard Mengel Cup in other Region 1 action in Horsham over the weekend.
