The Philadelphia Union U16 team opened their Generation adidas Cup finals campaign on Friday with a 5-0 win over New England Revolution in Frisco, Texas.
It was the second time in the competition this season the Union have beat New England by a lopsided scoreline. The U16s won 4-0 in an East qualifier match at the Power Training Complex in October.
Goalkeeper Kristopher Shakes registered the clean sheet in the match and Brenden Aaronson and Chad Letts each had two goals to lead the offense while Axel Picazo also added a goal. Letts has scored six goals in the competition since qualification began to lead the Union.
The Union will have a day off before facing C.F. Monterrey on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. eastern time. The game will be streamed live on MLS Soccer’s YouTube channel. They finish Group B play in the Premier Division bracket against Chicago Fire on Tuesday at 12:15 p.m.
C.F. Monterrey beat Chicago Fire 3-1 in the other Group B match of the day but the Union top the standings on goal differential heading into their match-up against the Mexican club Sunday.
The winner of the group will advance to the semifinals while the other three teams will get to play two more consolation matches.
