Highlight-reel goals, a Hall of Fame induction, college commitments, spring soccer and more

From the youth and college to the semipro and pro ranks, the Philadelphia region has an incredible amount of soccer happening from week to week that often doesn’t get near the attention it deserves. Below is a first attempt at rounding up some of the news and notes from the previous week.

Penn Fusion

Andrew Rosenblum played in the Mediterranean International Cup in Spain from April 12-16. Rosenblum, a defender, was on the 2002 boys U.S. Soccer Region 1 ODP team.

The U18s fell 4-2 to Bethesda SC (goals by R.C. Williams and Kevin Smolyn), U16s drew Bethesda SC 2-2 (goals by Jayson Vandermark and Jacob Lemelin), U14s fell 1-0 to Loudoun SC, U13s lost 2-1 to Loudoun on an own goal (Samuel Tryon got the Continental goal) and the U12s lost 2-1 and drew 1-1 against Cedar Stars Academy on Saturday and had a 6-3 win and scoreless draw against TSF Academy on Sunday.

PA Classics
The U18s fell 6-2 to New York Red Bulls (goals by Matteo Adiletta and Christopher Le), U16s lost 4-0 to Red Bulls, U14s drew against Arlington SA (goal by Braeden Glass), U13s losat 3-2 to Arlington SA (brace by Evan Watt) and U12s lost 1-0 and 3-2 to Players Development Academy.


Jason Cairns is being inducted into The College of New Jersey Hall of Fame on Friday. Cairns played at TCNJ from 1994-97 and went on to play professionally for the Cincinnati Riverhawks in the A-League and the New Jersey Stallions in the USL. He was drafted by the Philadelphia KiXX in 1997 but never played indoor soccer professionally.

Lehigh University landed the commitment of a former U17 Ghanaian in Michael Tahiru. He’s the third verbal for Lehigh’s 2018 class, which includes Josh Luchini and Justin Scharf (Newtown, Pa.).

Union Academy grad Joey DeZart started in a 5-0 win for Wake Forest over Virginia (and fellow Academy grads Raheem Taylor-Parkes and Jerren Nixon). “Joey is maturing every day and getting better,” head coach Bobby Muuss said in a Winston-Salem Journal article. “It’s all about confidence with him.”

Villanova fell 1-0 on the road at the Naval Academy on April 23.

Aramis Kouzine (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), Dami Omitaomu, Sam Hefter and Jerrel Blades (brace) scored for Penn in a 5-1 win over Junior Lone Star in their final match of the spring.

Penn Fusion midfielder Daniel Deger (Malvern, Pa.) verbally committed High Point for 2018.

PA Classics defender Ryan Kuster (Manheim, Pa.) committed to play Division III soccer at Alvernia in the fall.

Penn Fusion forward Alexis Ayala (New Castle, Del.) committed to play Division III soccer at Ursinus this fall.

New University of South Florida head coach Bob Butehorn announced his first recruiting class, which includes Philadelphia native and Philadelphia Union Academy and Bethlehem Steel FC midfielder Josue Monge.


Berlin, N.J. native and former Union U16 forward Isaiah Young had a goal and an assist for Werder Bremen’s U19 team in a win over RB Leipzig. You can see video here.

Union Academy and Bethlehem Steel defender Mark McKenzie (Bear, Del.) made three starts and an appearance off the bench for the United States U18 team at the Slovakia Cup. The U.S. came in second after losing 3-1 to Russia in the final.


U.S. Soccer has a feature on local NPSL club Junior Lone Star ahead of their debut in the U.S. Open Cup at Ocean City Nor’easters on May 10.


Rochester Rhino and former La Salle star Joe Farrell (Blue Bell, Pa.) scored this late equalizer against New York Red Bulls II.

Villanova 2017 recruit Sam Rogers scored this beauty, his first professional goal, for Seattle Sounders 2.
