The Union were able to maintain possession for a good part of the early going, turning possession into some good pressure at times. The Whitecaps were able to get a few chances early, with Matias Laba having a go at goal from long range about nine minutes in, however the ball was well over Andre Blake’s goal and not troubling the Union at all.
Andre Blake was called to make a save in the 14th minute when Kekuta Manneh sent a good ball in for Cristian Techera, but Blake was able to tip the ball up into the air where he was able to grab it and hold on.
Ex-Union left back Jordan Harvey cleared a ball off of the line off of a good cross by Fabinho in about the 15th minute.
In the 24th minute, the Union were lucky when Alphonso Davies had a nice layoff for Erik Hurtado, who sent Techera through. Techera’s pass went wide of the goal mouth, and the Union were out of danger once again.
The Union allowed a few breaks for Vancouver, and perhaps later in the season the ‘Caps would have been able to convert. Luckily for the Union, the passes and touches still had the weight of preseason rust on them,
In the 41st, Jay Simpson was put through but a good physical play from Christian Dean stopped the Union striker from posing any threat.
