Six points off the leaders in the standings, the Philadelphia Union U16 team will need a pair of wins and some help in Orlando next week to qualify for the championship round of the Generation adidas Cup.
The Union are 1-1-2 after the first four East Regional qualifiers and are a point behind second and third place New York Red Bulls and Orlando City, which both have six points. Atlanta United, which beat the Union 4-1 in the first game of the qualifiers at Power Training Complex in Chester, tops the table with 11 points.
Host Orlando City will be the Union’s first opponent on February 17 at 3 p.m. eastern time and they’ll play D.C. United three days later at 11:30 a.m. All games are being played at the University of Central Florida.
At the close of the weekend, the top two teams in the table will advance to the Championship Division in the GA Cup finals in Frisco, Texas in April. All other teams will qualify for the Premier Division. The Union last advanced to the Championship Division in 2015.
Argentine club River Plate has won the competition the last two seasons. The Union won it in 2012, the final year before international teams were invited.
