Freshman Carlos Cuevas scored his first career goal six minutes into overtime to break a deadlock and lead Drexel to their first win of the season over Temple on Tuesday night.

Cuevas, an Orlando, Florida native who spent time in the Orlando City Academy, redirected a pass from Colin McGlynn in the box past Temple goalkeeper Alex Cagle for the golden goal.

McGlynn scored his first of the season to level the score in the 17th minute and Ilai Shvika’s second of the year put the Dragons up in the 29th minute after he pounced on a loose ball from a Dakota Peterson corner kick.

Temple forward Jorge Gomez Sanchez opened the scoring just four minutes in with his fifth of the year and leveled the score in the 36th minute off a sharp cross from the left flank from Joonas Jokinen. Jokinen was also credited an assist on the first goal.

Gomez Sanchez nearly completed a first half hat trick when he found some space near the top of the box and fired a shot just wide of the far post after a lovely turn. Mark Grasela also came close to scoring off a bicycle kick earlier in the second half that would have made it 2-0.

The Temple pressure - a strength for the team this season as they’ve outshot every opponent - continued into the second half but Drexel goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach was up to the task, at one point turning away shots from Kevin Klett and Albert Moreno in rapid succession. He also did well to slide in and break up another bid for a hat trick from Gomez Sanchez.

The loss was the second straight for the Owls (4-2-0) and the first win of the season for the Dragons (1-2-2). A lively crowd of 1,283 turned out for the match at Vidas Field in West Philadelphia.

La Salle shuts out James Madison, St. Joe’s wins second straight

Colman Kennedy scored in the 75th minute and Mike Kirk registered three saves to lead La Salle to the 1-0 shutout on the road at James Madison Tuesday night.

The Explorers improved to 5-1-0 with the win. The shutout was Kirk’s fourth of the season.

Mori Diane scored in the 63rd minute to lift St. Joseph’s (2-3-0) to their second straight victory, a 1-0 win over Hartford on Tuesday evening.

Diane, a senior forward, tucked his third career goal after junior midfielder Matt Crawford created a turnover just outside the box.

Goalkeeper Greg O’Connell made one save in the 13th minute and recorded his second straight clean sheet.

Rider falls to Princeton, Lehigh wins 1-0

Seifert added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute and freshman Benjamin Martin opened the scoring in the 61st for the Tigers.

Clement Bourret scored an equalizer for Rider in the 73rd minute.

Mark Forrest scored his fourth goal in two games to lead Lehigh to a 1-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson.

Jacob Gottwald made two saves to register the clean sheet for the Mountain Hawks (2-3-0).
