You may remember that the Union defeated the Red Bulls in the quarterfinals of last year's tournament. That game went into extra time and eventually required penalty kicks to decide a victor. The two clubs also met in the now-extinct Open Cup qualification process back in 2010. The Red Bulls defeated the Union, 2-1, in that one.
Of the 16 teams still alive in the Open Cup, 14 are from Major League Soccer. Two NASL clubs--New York Cosmos and Fort Lauderdale Strikers--have also been drawn in this round.
