Billy McConnell and Will Campbell have made quite the pair in the middle of Reading United's defense so far this season. The Union Academy alums have paired three out of Reading's four games so far this season, anchoring a defense that has not surrendered a goal.
Campbell was back in the starting lineup over the weekend and the Reading defense pitched another shutout, their second in league play to go with two clean sheets in Open Cup play.
Georgetown senior forward Brett Campbell got in on the goal-scoring party on Saturday, adding the team's fifth goal in a 5-0 route of Evergreen FC. The goal was the 11th in a Reading uniform for Campbell in his third season with the team.
Campbell was the only Reading player to convert a penalty in a disappointing shootout that saw NPSL side Chattanooga FC advance in the U.S. Open Cup after a scoreless draw.
Villanova sophomore midfielder Zachary Zandi made his second start for Reading in the match but had to leave in the 43rd minute. His former midfield teammate with the U18 team, Northeastern sophomore Kevin Carvalho, also started the match.
Defender Kaique Fernandes, a recent addition to the Reading roster, made his first start for the team on Saturday. Fernandes, a senior at Wright State, is the younger brother of Union and Bethlehem Steel FC midfielder Leo Fernandes. At 6-foot-3, little brother has three inches on Leo.
